Ghost Pedal?
Wednesday, May 04, 2005 8:21 PM
My wife's 03 has a interesting issue: it likes to just take off.

Sometimes after driving in traffic, you take you foot off the gas, and it just keeps
going. When you tap the brake, however, it stops doing it.

The dealership tried to blame a stuck floormat (pushed to the pedal) but the last
few times it has happened there was not even a floormat in there!

Anyone know what would cause something like that? It's very strange, that's for
sure...

You tap the brake and it stops? Sounds like the Cruise controls is messed up to me.

Disconnect the cruise control wire from the throttle and see if that helps any.

Believe it or not-she doesn't. But the CC issue is something I had not thought of.

Would it be possible it could happen to a cav w/ less than 20k?

Hmm..

definately sounds like the CC is engaging itself. anything is possible with GM behind the manufacturing

how fast are you going when happens? i thought the cc couldnt be engaged period unless your going like 40+mph. could be wrong though. id also check for carbon build up in the throttle body causing it to stick open some.

More than likely a computer sensor. Prob idle air control valve. Most GM's use it to control the fine opening of the throttle body at idle. If the computer detects an out of range signal it may move the throttle plate open a small amount more than usual. Electronic components like his are hard to diagnose and techs often just make up an excuse rather than say what they really mean which is, "I can't find the problem, if it breaks then we can fix it." You can try to test some of the sensors on your can related to idle, and low speed throttle control, but if its under warranty I'd have them put it on the computer.

And if it doesn't just creep forward, instead it is trying to really take off, you might want to look into an exorcism. jk.

Really though if it is more than a slow creep it is serious and they need to fix it and if I were you I'd set up camp at the dealer especially if its under warranty. Too many dealers these days are trying to get out of repairing peoples cars.

That could be it too. I plan camp it out there till they figure it out. If it was mine and
not my wife's, I might not be as worred. Bu The more info that I could have them look at,
the better chance they might fix it. At least I hope so.

Exorcism. I like that one...

I forgot to add that it usually happens in city traffic, between 35-65 MPH, though
It will do this on the freeway, but not as often....

I had this happen in my cutlass.... after it got out of the shop turns out it was the cruise control and the guy had some how twisted the cable a few times.... except when i hit the brakes it didnt stop it imagine how fun it is to put a car in nuetral at 50 mph in a 25 mph zone and watch it bounce of the rev limiter till you slowed down and stoped it.

Update...the dealership couldn't find a @#@in' thing wrong, even after my nice suggestions....they drove the thing for like 30 miles...couldn't get it to do it....

i remember on 1 of my friends mecury sable.. the cruise control went out and the car would just speed up and you couldnt get it to stop with the brakes just like Emor8t (IDI....)'s experience. but it could be either 1
