Blew the Motor Keep the car?
Monday, May 16, 2005 4:35 AM
ok well yesterday in my 96 z24 Manual with 87k on it. i spun the bearings on the motor. do guys think it worth it to keep the car? or just sell it as it.
The mods to car were
Intrax Lowering Springs, SPEC stage II Clutch, z3 fenders, mangaflow exhuast, and the rest are minor mods.
The trans on the car is still ok i mean it might be on its way out in the future but it still shifts good for the most part.
if i shouldnt keep how much do you think i can get for my car? or just part it out?

i can tell you from my old car that mods that you put on dont matter to the people buying it for the most part... dealers could care less from my experience... so if you decide to sell it i can bet you wont get more than 1000 if it has a blown motor... try to find those dealer specials with the push pul or tow it in for credit deals..

oh yeah i just put some new front brakes and a new gas tank in it..
but from what i know if i just sell it for parts or what not i know i am only going to get a grand or so. i mean i could sell the mods for a few extra bucks...other than that i think it might be worth finding a new 2.4....Cuz since im only 18 my mom said she would only let me a 4 grand loan and i have 5 grand... i dont know what i could buy with 9 grand... im prob better of buying a new motor and saving my money for a down payment in like a year for something bigger and better....?

well i have 5 grand in the bank that i have been saving due to the fact i put like half of my paycheck everyweek from my job that i work 33 hours a week at. so it adds up over time and when i get money for my birthday and stuff i put it in the bank. i paid 3500 for my cavalier...i donno i got almost exactly 1 year ago. i dont know how much it would cost to rebuild it. and the 9 grand comes from my mom said she would take out a loan in my name for only up to 4 grand beacuse i could pay that off over the summer from working my ass off. but still 9 grand inst that much to buy a nicer car..i wanta get a vr 6 or a 1.8T... how much do you think i twould cost to rebuild my engine? or should i just part it out? i just cant find a OEM rebuild kit cuz i was looking that the proformance ones and they are really up there to buy all the parts to rebuild it.... heh and the labor of getting rebuild looks like it would be upword of 2000+ and its only a Jbody.....

and also how long did he drive the car before died? cuz i dont want to be stranded somewhere..heheh but i do have AAA

I got my Sunfire for 10k. So maybe work out another grand with her and see how it goes.

@!#$.. you can buy LOTS of cars for $9k. I only paid $11.5k (Canadian) for my 2000 convertible.

Either go get a new motor and put it in (if you want to keep that car)... it's not THAT expensive..

Or if you want to keep the mods, go buy a nice used 99 or 2000 Z24.. swap your mods over... then sell the remains of the 96Z for cheap. You'll still have money left over in the end.

I agree I wish I had 9 grand to play with right now to buy a car also. I'd junk my current pain-in-the-arse hissy fit throwing 97 Cavi and go out and get a 02-04 Ecotec powered Cavi with low miles on it. For 9 grand you can easily find Cavalier's out there with 20,000 miles or so on them and maybe less. You just have to look. Can always start with auto trader. (You can even upgrade to used Malibu's with low mileage for 6-9k or so...).

Go to a dealership, and get an 05 base model cavalier. This way you get an eco to work with, most of your current mods will still work, and you'll only have to pay around 9k for it after rebates. Don't waste your money trying to rebuild a 96, the value of our Cavaliers make it hard to justify that being worth it.

Get another car, you can get a new cavalier or at least a slightly used one (03+) for 9k and have a nice engine to start modding, a new car that won't break in a year, and you can keep most of your mods from your old car.

Depending on the price you get for it (hopefully 9000ish), this may acutally be a good idea. You'd have warranty, plus peace of mind that you know the car is new and un-beat-on. Just remember you'd have to live with that car for the next few years at least so be sure its what you want.

Look for a new motor. I blew the bearings on mine. After awhile good things come to you. I have to say thanks to Karo and 97 jdm Cavie. Those 2 guys have been a big help.

At 18 I'd say the best course of action would be to get a new motor and keep the car since (I'm assuming) it's paid off. I LOVE not having car payments. This is actually the first time in 7 years I haven't had car payments. As far as a new car, I'd wait until you're more settled to tackle some more car payments. Heck I'm 24 and right now couldn't handle car payments (got too many other bills to pay haha)

well the way things are going the car is going far far away lol. im going to try to sell it. alotho i love the little guy, it was my 1st love hhahha im going to miss it, alot.

without:

muffler
z3 fenders
subs,headunit,amp,wiring
maybe take out the springs....if im in the mood
clear corners

maybe the hood (even though its stock my firend might need it)
stock tails

how much do you guys think i can get for it or will offer for it. i will have pics up later tonight.

by the looks of it im going to hopefully buy a integra gsr. because im getting a b18c5 head, vis carbon fiber hood, z3 fenders, body kit, cold air intake and full ehxuast header to muffler for a very good price. cuz my bud is redoing his entire gsr into a jdm spec type r.

I'd have to agree with Fallen on having no car payments, it's so nice! The more I think about this the more I say get the engine swap done in her and get those Z3 fenders painted. Will be better than new!
