Idle

Hey all, I posted this in maintenance to no prevail

I know I'm not that well known around here, and that there are some similar problems to mine on this board but none of them seem to completely address my issue. Here goes...

I drive a 2002 Ecotec Z-24 5-speed(Canadian) and most times when I just start the car and drive, when I hit the clutch the revs will drop really fast down to about 400RPM and almost stall out and they won't level off until the car comes to a complete stop, and now it will do this at about 5-6 stop signs and then will start to drive somewhat normally. Also, when the idle is levelled off at about 1000RPM and I turn on the A/C the idle will dip down to 500 for a second or two and then level off, but won't do it after the car has levelled off from stopping 5-6 times. I have had the recall done for the ECU/PCM to no avail, and the only code I ever thorw is P0440 (catalytic converter related). Any ideas here guys? Other than this the car drives fine, but makes for a very uncomfortable drive because even when shifting from 1-2 I have to let the clutch out really fast because of how fast the revs dip until the car decides to level off. And just as a side note, it's not temp related, as even after driving for a while if I shut it off and start it right back up it will start all over again.

Have you checked to see if the IAC solenoid is operating correctly . Sounds like it may be a clogged passage or the IAC is screwing up . If you have a friend or you know someone that works at a shop with a diagnostic computer they should be able to hook up and ride with you and see what is going on .

Hey Mr. Goodwrench...

Here I go sounding even more like a n00b... I'm not though, trust me... lol

I have heard that it's possible to clean the IAC solenoid... I realize it's located on the throttle body but could maybe point me in an exact direction as to where it is located and what it looks like? Also, is there a reset procedure I have to go through after cleaning it? Keep in mind it's an Ecotec.

Thanks again

Yeah I know it's messed up, in Canada they built some (z-24's) with the Ecotec as an option. I bought the car used from a dealership. Yup you're right, it's got Z wheels, Z badging, Z body kit, and LS Sport under the hood (Ecotec) I thought it might have been mis-badged but even the VIN brings it up as a Z-24.

The IAC will be the only big solenoid bolted to the T/B it will have a 4 pin connector . You may want to remove the T/B to clean it good but the IAC should alright when you reinstall it and hook everything up . The PCM will adjust it as it as it needs to .
