You have an Auto 2.2, and you want to swap to a 5 speed? or a 2.4 & 5 speed?

If your just swapping to a 5 speed....... just order the chip for the 95 2.2 5 speed, swap your tranny in, and swap the chips.

If you are swapping to a 2.4 and 5 speed, pick up a 2.4 engine wire harness (that matches the computer your using, or get a full 99 setup), and add the fuel tank pressure sensor to your body harness..... (if you really need it)

Yah, just swapping a 5-spd tranny onto my existing 2.2

If I call the local GM dealer and say "Hey, I want a memcal chip for a 1995 5-spd 2.2l ECM" they'll know exactly what I want? I had someone else tell me that he tried the "tried and true" method of ECM flashing via GM and that didn't solve the issues he had. Only when he did a full computer change did that remedy his problem. Am I gonna run into this same BS doing the chip swap?

yeah I knew all 95 2.2's were the same regardless of tranny...I just thought they were OBD II, guess I was wrong lol....judging by the numerous corrections...

Now...what I want to know is...

Jake's car...OBD I or OBD II, we got 2 people here that live by him, and know him well...how do we know who's telling the truth...both are very reputable sources...

So it's safe to say all first and second gen cars are OBD1?

yep i am OBD2, not sure where you got that from ron. I just hooked up my OBD2 code reader a half hour ago to clear my EGR code. (shakes fist in air).

(nevermind, trying a trick another JBO 96z' owner told to me do with the EGR simulator to have no drop in voltage( .4v drop when hooked up the ZZ way, .1v his way).

carry on

Thats how it should work. The OBD-1 ECM's where pretty much all the same, minus the chips. (per platform) All the engine controls are in the EPROM, and since the older auto trannies were not PCM controled (except Torque Converter Lock Up?) the only differences are going to be the IDLE, and some other base line functions.

Swap the EPROM and it should work fine.

EPROM = memcal

yes, Jake's car is OBD-II..... second O2 sensor, and EGR are a dead give away......... that and the FED. regulations saying all 96+ model year vehicles MUST be OBD-II.....

Just a quote from the 95 owners manual. " Certain vehicles are equipped with a new emission diagnostic system. You can tell whether your vehicle has this system by reading the tune up label located under the hood." Of course mine says OBDI.

just to let you know...you have IMO the IDEAL J, OBD I 5 speed vert...means you can drop in a W41 no big deal

what's a W41?

and what do you mean by "5-spd vert"?
Re: Which cars are OBD1 and OBD2?

5 speeds convertible (sp?)

what's a W41? hum, the nicest little Gm engine you can find. Pretty much the bad boy of the 4cyl family from Gm.

190hp @ 6800rpm
160lbs/tq @ 5200rpm

a rev limiter set at 7400rpm for the 91 and 7200 for the 92-93.

It's a better version of the Quad 4 (not the 2.4 twin cam).

You had the Lo, Ho, W41 POS of SOHC and the 95 bastard. All of them were 2.3 but the W41 was the best off them coming from Gm.

But for the few that know about quad, the best one would be a 5spd vert with a BILMAR engine, then it's the ideal J.

Who yall calling a bastard? I love my car. Fyi, I bought a new GTZ in 90 just like your picture Mfk. I traded it in 93 on a Lumina van. I needed something bigger.

The 95 2.3 is a bastard

I love my Gtz even if I've put too much money in it. with the turbo I'm around 10k canadian and I got my 02 Z24 for 11k. Granted the Z is not turbo

As for how it run? REally good. feel better than stock but the engine is appart now. I got the boost fever and my Haltech wasn't working and I ran WAY too lean.

10psi with NO fuel upgrade and it was still working. I've since been able to make my Haltech work but I'm rebuilding the engine for a 3rd time.

first time, forgot the check every coolant hose and one of the heater core hose came loose. Nice smoke show but the head crack. - it last 6km and cost 600$ to build the first engine

2nd - ran the engine stock for 1500km and then put the turbo on and ran lean. Need new rings and head work. last around 15-20km and cost 2200$ to build that engine

3rd - waiting for the $$ to buy parts

That's without the 2000$ for the turbo setup.

The way I look at it , if I have very few problems with a car it is a good car. Other than the shake, rattle and roll of a Cavalier convertible, it is a great car. The GTZ only had 31,000 miles on it when I traded it. The only problem I had was the sunroof. The dealers could not fix it so I did. If the GTZ was a convertible I would miss it.

mantapart has these chips. benefit being no speed limiter, changable rev limiter if I remember right, plus they're less stingy if I know right.

W41 is the god of all GM 4cyl

define "stingy" for me. I know what it means but how does it apply to my car being chipped. Do you mean less stingy fuel consumption, less stingy in the HP area, what?

wasn't there a law that all cars made in 1996-up had to have OBD 2? because the government wanted one system used on all cars no matter the make to make it easier for mechanics to diagnose them.

OBD2.

All 96+ models are OBD2.

All 95 models are OBD1, EXCEPT the 2.3L auto which is OBD2. And all 95's come with OBD2 connectors (have fun)
