Spending $30K on a Cavy?
Saturday, June 18, 2005 10:56 AM
Ok, by next year I plan to have $30,000 saved, now I was going to buy a Mustang or Camaro but being only 18 insurance is going to rape me plus gas prices. So I was looking at a Stealth but they are prone to break and cost a lot to fix, plus insurance and gas. So my plan of action it to buy a Z24 (99-2000) and completely build the engine(turbo cams etc.), add an LSD, buy the best clutch I can get, awesome wheels and tires. You know completely done. Body wise I want stock, maybe a small spoiler, and CF hood. Ok, would the sleeper affect be worth it?? It won't be drive daily, but I want to be able to get in and go. Any advice or comments is greatly welcomed. Thank you.

Personally i would never do that. use it for a down payment on a house or when you really need it. dont stick 30grand into a car thats worth 4grand. but to each their own right?

Spending 30k on a car at the age of 18 seems crazy to me, but its your earned money, so you really should spend it how you want to. I'm only 20, and I have nowhere near that much money, but if I did I'd definately be using it to help pay for college or an investment such as a house.

Yes....... I know that's not a lizard.

WOW Do not do that LOL. Actually you made 30 grand so I am sure that in another 18 years you can make 30 grand again. Then you will be 36 and still at home right? Cause you spent that 30 grand on a car that you won't even want when your 36. Come on man, save it and use it on something that will build money instead of depreceate.

$30k on a car that will be worth less than $5k when you want to sell it... Aftermarket parts add exactly $0 to the value of a car. Also try to find an insurance company to cover a $30k cavalier...

So then what should I do? I want a fast car. But I don't want to pay arm and leg for insurance and gas. Well, I'll see later. Maybe I'll get a new Mustang GT. Well thanks a lot.

drop the money into a cobalt ss, then what is left see about a down payment on a house. you will be better off getting a investment than anything else you do.

I'm still stuck at home for a couple more years because the banks told me they wont consider me for a house until I'm 21 which sucks but I can save up more money until then. And no I don't want to put the money into a Cobalt SS because I don't like the styling of them. Well lata.

Well you can go with an 87-92 IROC Camaro or Mustang 5.0. The 5.0 will be a lot faster to start off with tho. You can drop a little money into the mustang and youll be hella quck for a small amount of money (like 10000 or less with car price depending how wild you wanna go). Insurance wont be that much cus the car is soo old. I know you dont wanna spend a lot of money on gas but any car that is actually fast will eat up some gas. A turbo cavalier will also drink a lot of gas too. Plus you cant beat the sound of a muscular V8.

i think were both confused a bit here..ok so youve got 30k..im sure you dont wanna put the whole thing into the car cus lets face it...its just not reasonable..but you do want to go fast and your willing to spend some dough well try something alittle more reasonable get you a bone stock z for cheap and put about 5-6 grand in it...you wanna go fast, thatll get you pretty fast...i mean if you wanna drop some cash into the cav thats cool...just not the whole thing man.

Yes, what I should have said was I got 30K to spend, what should I do. I will try to find a Camaro or something. Thanks anyway. I'll get my own place as soon as I turn 21 and the bank will look at me. Thanks a lot.

20k will buy you a very nice late 90's vette. Then you can play with that. At least with a vette it will be worth something in 10 years compared to a Cavalier. If you pay cash for a car, you can have minimum coverage and it will not be so expensive. Also, look into getting a vintage vehicle and fix it up. Ins would be cheap for an early 70's Mustang or Camaro. In West Texas, 30k will buy you a nice 2 bedroom 1 bath house with central air and a garage. Hell, I paid 46k for my 3 bedroom, 1 bath, 1 garage 2300 sqft home. Also, being that your 18. Whats your plans on higher education. 30k will go a long way. It will go longer than a Cavalier and also, you can make more money in the future and have a very fast car with a cool garage for it.

My higher education is covered. I am getting into a job where I can make over 100K a year. Here in Nova Scotia houses are quite expensive plus if it's cheap I have to make repairs on that. I like the Corvette so we'll see how it plays out by here. Later.

I would get the cav, spend mabye $6000 in engine, transmission, and suspension. It would be more if you had to pay someone else to do the work. If you wanted to do more than a sleeper you could spend a few grand extra and get a body kit, wheels and paint.

im saying go ahead and buy a newer cavalier.....but DONT drop all 30K into it.....you could make the car tight as hell for about 6-8 grand and then save the rest to move out

I know we are J-body fans and all but let;s face it. You put money into a Jbody and it is gone. AjJbody is not an investment. It's a money pit. If he buys something worth something (Like a Vette or Cobra or like the such) you can put money into and have a hell of a better chance of getting the money back in the future cause it's a collectors car and it has a much better fan base than our Jbodys will ever have. I've put $4k into the engine of my Cavalier and now I'm sitting back thinking that putting that into a Mustang or T/A would have been much better. But that money is gone now.

Spend wisely and in perspective.

I'd say pick up a 95-99 Cavalier with a blown or high mileage engine, but that the body is solid on it. You should be able to score something for around $1000 or less. Don't worry about what model it is (Z24, RS, etc), because you can put whatever you want in it if you're planning on building a motor anyway.
Then you can build it up for $10K or even well under, depending on how nuts you wanna go with it. You'd have spent far less, and have a sweet car. Seriously, take the advice of the people telling you to put it towards a house. Even if the banks won't consider you right now, you can keep saving until they will, then you'll have seriously low payments. Once you've got that house taken care of, you can blow money as you see fit, but you'll be WAY better off owning a house than having a sick car that's not worth anywhere near what you put into it.

You can't get a GTO is Canada, nor the Evo, cause Canada is weird like that. Well I'm gonna put some cash into my Firenza and just buy a daily beater for now. Thanks everyone.

Driving an 18wheeler across Canada and the US. I'm going to start with my dads business this summer when I take my course and I will work more than him and he makes 117K clear a year. He works for 10 days and take a week off. And no this isn't just some estimate my dad and I have crunched a lot of numbers to get this, but it can be more or less depending on how much I work.
