Go to a dealer and hand him $8000 for a (brand new)bare @$$ cavi, then u can dump another $5000 - $6000 into that, which would build you a fast sports car for $14,000.

You are 18 years old and still a kid, build a toy cause maybe in a few years you will need all your money to raise your children.

I am 31, and I have built vette/puss-stang 5-point-slow killing cars, several times over.
But now I have a family, and can't dump all my cash into my hobbies/addictions anymore.

I have gone from dumping over $1000 a weekend into my 700+ HP circle track car, to saving $100.00 every 2 weeks (if I am lucky) to put into a 140 HP cavalier.

Fate is a cruel thing my friends.

I just ran across this forum last night. I've got a '96 2.2L cav that I'm about to do some fixin' up on. Anyway, this is my first post and it's going to have almost nothing to do with Cavaliers...LOL

This is my recomendation for your financial/car questions. Before you decide anything, get hold of a copy of the books "The Total Money Makeover: A Proven Plan for Financial Fitness" by Dave Ramsey and "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" by Robert Kiyosaki. Read through these two books and get an understanding of what they are saying.

After reading these books, if you still want to spend a chunk of money on a fast car I've got a recomendation there too (granted, I don't know if you can do this in Canada, but if so...). The other disclaimers are that you've got to be good at mechanical work, willing to spend the time, and not need the car for a daily driver (which I believe you said it wouldn't be a daily).

If I had 20 - 25 thou to put into a car right now, I'd buy a late '80s / early '90s Mustang GT with the 5 speed tranny. Look for a cheap one that has a decent drivetrain. The body and interior can be rubish.

Then go to www.factoryfive.com and order one of their '65 roadster kits. When you're done, you've got a 1965 AC Cobra kit car with a Ford factory drivetrain. Even with the stock engine the car will be fast and corner great. Upgrade parts for the 5.0L engine are plentiful and reasonably priced. There's no reason I see that you couldn't build one of these for under $25,000 and in the end you've got something that's not only fast, but that also looks really cool.

This of course is coming from a Chevy guy (I've never owned a Ford in my life, but I've considered it just for the sake of building one of these kits).

So, there's my first post... jumping off into the deep end in this forum.

Why would you go with a ford drivetrain?!?

The best Cobras out there actually have GM powerplants.

And I wouldn't go that route, insurance will be just as high as if you bought your new Camaro/Corvette.

Maybe alot of people missed that in his first post, he wants to keep his insurance cost low, so buying a sports car won't help that.

Best bet is buying a 4 cylinder, 4 door car, and slamming performance parts into it(even a 2 door cavalier won't rape you on insurance.).

When I was 17 - 18 years I bought an 83 Chevy Malibu 4 door, had a 3.8L in it, I put in a 350 with a 400 crank, puched 40 over, high-rise performance intake, World heads, highflow headers, 3 inch true dual exhaust, with remote header dump butterfly valve(i custom created it.), back to 2 Flowmaster muffs, TH350 trans, corvette independent suspension, 12 inch disk break conversion(all the way around), Z28 aluminum wheels.

I miss that car

Good point on the insurance.

As far as the Ford drivetrain... Your question would be best answered by the Factory Five website. Their whole concept was to put the bulk of the money for the kit into the chassis, suspension, and body. The buyer/builder supplies a donor car and uses the drivetrain, brakes, radiator, and other parts from the donor to finish out the kit. The kit has one of the highest ratings from a number of magazines. The kit only supports the Ford drivetrain.

Moving on, the '83 sounds like fun. My first car was a '73 Nova 2dr hatchback with police interceptor gears (256 ratio) and a 307ci. I dropped in a 350ci, 425hp Chevy casting, Mercury Marine built engine and beefed up the TH350 tranny. With the long gears, the car would do over 60mph in first gear and over 110 in second. I got into all kinds of trouble with that car.

Anyway, I didn't want or intend to hijack the thread. The more important part of the earlier advice was meant to be the books anyway.

If I were you I would drop my money into a used 1998+ Cadillac STS, or Eldorado ETC. They both are pushin 300 horses with the 4.6L Northstar and in my opinion are the best valued used cars to buy! These are 50 and 60 thousand dollar cars brand new and you can get a used one for around or under 10k! I get between 20 and 25 miles to the gallon in my STS and that is almost as good as my sister's stock Cavalier. The 0-60 is in the mid to high 6's and the 1/4 mile is in the mid to high 14's! And with under $1000 dollars worth of performance mods you be runnin in the low 6's and low 14's! I pay $1800 a year for insurance on my Cadillac. I may not be a J-body but I think it is a good idea. I put practically all my money into my car if I saved up 30k, more than 80% of it would be going into my car or my bike. Oh, and they are total sleepers, no one expects that out of a Caddy.

No offense but I know when I get excited about cars and when I get excited about possibly making over 100k a year two things happen....

1) The money that I plan on saving for next year, in your case, 30k will most likely never happen because a lot can happen in one year

2) A job that promises 100k or more a year usually never is.

Those are just my experience being 30 yrs old and been through all the motions you are going through. I hope I am wrong and wish you luck!

But like everyone said....save the money and use a fraction of it to build your cavalier and use the rest for your future.

if your going to pay cash for a car insurance no matter how high shouldnt be an issue, your living at home, with a newly paid off car. even high insurance is going to be no diffrent then a monthly car payment, and if your sure your ggoing to be making 100k a year, insurance wont mean a thing to you.

as for what car to buy, come back in a year when you have 30k in the bank. you see it so many times people tell u what they are buying and all this WHEN they get their money, and if they ever get their money at all wich they usually dont, they go with something diffrent anyway. so go earn your money, then come back and ask the question again.

Not to be too pessimistic but what happens when/if you crash it? First off, the insruance company will send you your $5000 cheque which, I guess would buy a decent headstone because, as we all know, these cars aren't all too wonderful in an accident (let alone one @ 100mph).

Just my 2 cents but take the 30k, get a cosigner, buy a house.

30K into a Cavalier?

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHHHAHAHAAHA

You'll regret it for the rest of your life.

And though your friends may be sympathic for some time, you will always be known as the clown who put 30K into a Cavalier.

Spend $500- and put a quad motor/drivetrain in a lawn tractor and go to quad races. THAT would be some serious fun!

For cars, dont dump 30K into a cavalier. never going to be worth it. Then again for 10grand make it RWD and put a Big block chevy, turbo 400 trans, custom driveshaft and 12bolt with 4:10 gears in a cavi. THAT would be fun(er)!
