5 speed swap PCM flash
Sunday, June 26, 2005 3:52 PM
Well, the swap's done... aside from a few minor issues left... like the car trying to start by itself and driving thru the garage door but I digress....

That PCM is a darn incredible piece of technology... somehow it KNEW that it was no longer an automatic... and was now a 5-speed. It idles at 900rpm... and lets me rev it past the 4000 rpm limiter....

And here I thought I'd have to go get the thing re-flashed to run properly....

Sweet man, how much did it cost you in the end to do the swap? And also, how hard was it?

Write up...

1. Remove old engine & tranny
2. Cut out auto tranny mounts
3. Weld in new 5 speed mounts
4. Re-install engine with new tranny
5. Hook up everything

Cost? Haven't added it all up yet... but... $400 cdn for the tranny & flywheel. $100 cdn for axles. $40? for rear trans mount bracket, $35? for front trans mount bracket. $50? for poly trans bushings, $150 for pedals, shifter, 5-speed wiring harnesses (engine & dash), $350 USD for the SPEC stage 2 clutch.. I'm sure I'm leaving something out...

I did the head P&P w/ oversize valves at the same time... and secret cams.. so.. I took 5 weeks to do it all at the same time.

Did you swap gauge clusters? If not I would not think there would be a need to swap wiring in the dash, just the engine bay.

dash wiring to install the clutch switch....... thats all that I could think of..... unless you where afraid to leave the park/neutral switch in the car.......

IDK how your car thinks its a 5 speed now....... when I did the swap, we reflashed the PCM before we pulled the trans out, and it still moved on the auto (only 1st gear though).... maybe having the harness unplugged from the trans, it has some sort of back up program.... if it cant tell the trans isnt in gear, it must just assume your in first.

I like your write up..... its pretty much the same as mine, except we didnt pull the engine (yea, I know, you where working on yours while it was out)

Ok, I stand corrected. I think it hadn't kicked down from open loop to the 600rpm it seems to idle at now. Ah well. Other than that and the A/C not kicking in, it's ok..

So.... anyone know the actual procedure for the reflash to the 5 speed program? I can't seem to find it in my service manual, and if I go to GM the techs are gonna stare at me as if I have a third eyeball...

"You wanna do WHAT?"

It's a lot easier if I just tell them exactly how to do their jobs... funny, that... maybe I should apply there... heh....

Ok.. how about this.... instead of getting the 5 speed reflash... then installing the supercharger... then getting the 5 speed supercharger reflash....

How about I just go get the 5 speed supercharger flash? Would that work? Is a "reflash" the entire program? Or do I need to get the 5 speed n/a first?

The S/C is just a cal update, which means it only updates the fuel and spark tables, you'd still need the other stuff to run the tranny, so you need the entire flash.

Ok... next question... anyone know the VIC for the 5 speed flash? Or any other information I should call up that GM phone # and ask for, prior to taking my car into the dealer?

I know damn well that they've NEVER had to do this reflash before... so if I can go in knowing my stuff, it'll make it 1 million times easier.

Thanks

I can give you a vin # for a vehicle with the GM S/C...... and a 5speed..... thats the easiest way for them to reflash your computer.

1. Request info from stock computer (threw obd port)
2. hook to Desk Top w/ GM SI2000
3. when asked if this is the correct vin, erase entry, and input new vin.
4. continue with programming
5. upload program into car (threw obd port)

easy....... 15mins tops.

email me for the vin. Lenko.

Hmm... well, I tried calling that 1-800# and gave them a dealer code (which worked! LOL!) and gave them the VIN I found on cartrader.com... they said they didn't support transmission swaps, so they were unable to provide me with a VCI number for the 5 speed swap..

Does this mean there is NO way to reflash the PCM for 5 speed? Because without that number, it's not exactly possible... and if they don't support it... eh? wtf?

How the hell do I do this? There isn't a 5 speed 2.4L PCM in the wrecking yards around here... so I may be up a proverbial creek without a paddle

just use that vin to reflash the pcm , and then get the vsi # for the s./c reflash on that vin

although you might need to change the bcm with a vin # to match the new 1 for the pcm

ive got a 2.4 auto pcm that was part of the proto type s/c w/motor and trans i got , i havent tried to see if it would work though with my 00 cav bcm
