EcoTec 2.2 vs. OHV 2.2
Friday, September 16, 2005 8:11 AM
A buddy of mine just bought an '04 Cavalier w/the Ecotec motor. I could see by popping the hood that his ignition setup (no plug wires) & cyl. head are not like my OHV 2.2.

I'm sure this info is posted on the site somewhere, but I've only got a certain number of hours in the day to be online. What are the major differences between the 2 engines?

What are the hp ratings from the factory? Are they both timing chain motors? Is the Ecotec head a 16V? He said his car has pretty good pick-up where as mine is a dog. Is the gas mileage roughly the same?

How hard to swap from a 2.2 OHV to Ecotec?

The ecotec is an all aluminum block. Also it is a DOHC, dual over head cam. Which is 2 intake valves and 2 exhaust valves per cylinder. The OHV is just that single cam over head valve. That is only 1 intake valve and 1 exhaust valve per cylinder.

Stock hp is 140 for ecotec and 115 for the OHV.

Pretty much what he said except the camshaft in the 2200 is between the block and the head instead of over the head like how DOHC motors are.

Also, yes the ECOTEC has 16 valves, the 2200 has 8 valves. If you both have the same transmissions, the gas mileage should be about the same.

the ecotec is superior for sure. 145 bhp to your 115 bhp, more torque as well. Acheived through its DOHC valvetrain. an engine swap should be cake because the OHV engine is avaiable in cars '00 up that also sport the ecotec, but dont hold me to it, engine mounts may be different but easilly interchangable

So, does the Ecotech use a timing belt then or 2 timing chains to run both camshafts?

1. It's spelled ECOTEC not ECOTECH
2. Timing Belt I believe is the correct answer...

Well logic and cost really depend on the person. If you want to invest money for a better motor than that's your perogative. Some people think it's not worth it, others think it is. Yes, you're right, anything is possible with the right about of dollar bills.

The ECOtec uses 1 timing CHAIN for both cams

unfortunately nowadays it takes insane amounts of money to make the world, and our cars, go round...

It would be easier to swap a twin cam, lot less modification

there are two chains in a Eco motor ..one for timing and one to drive the water pump.... Its not as easy as one would think to swap from a 2200 to a 2.2 eco .. I have done two of these swaps already .. you CANT just change the motors there are other things to swap also .. your best bet If you want to do this is to find a wrecked cavy with the eco and swap out the parts that you will need ... the two I have done . we went from 2200 auto to a 2.2 eco with 5speed trans

if you drive your friends car you will notice a difference, it's quiet, smooth, and has alot more pickup then your engine.....

i have a 2.2OHV, but ive driven about 3 cav's w/ eco's and there is a difference

ECOs have a nice sound. Sounds like a realy small Lambo v12. Once the hydrolic lifters start working it realy opens up the valves it starts pulling harder. Only problem with the ECOs is that you want to rev them to mutch and it kills your gas mileage.

Ok, now that we're getting all those weird little questions out of the way:

Is it pronounced "ee-co-tech" or "eck-oh-tech". I always say it the first way, but I thought about how it's "Economic Technology", and the first part of economic would be pronounced the second way...

It's pronounced, according to GM, as "Eck-oh-tech"

OK, then does the EcoTec (no "h") use a tensioner on the chain(s) like the older 2.4L motor? I'm really behind the curve on these motors so bear with me.

I'm not looking to spend high $ to try & do this swap. I like the 2.2 I've got, I just would like a little more power for getting on the Interstate & such. I think I saw somebody had a used header for sale for an older 2.2.

Would adding a header mess up the computer at all? Or wouldn't it make much difference unless I changed out the rest of the exhaust too?

Thanks for all the replies (even the smarta$$ ones).

Adding a header shouldn't mess up your computer if installed correctly.

the ECOtec has a hydraulic tensioner. so its not like the older Nylon tensioner.... much much better technology...
