Sunday, September 18, 2005 5:47 PM
hey guys i got a quick ?. i know the main difference between a 2002 and a 2003 ecotec motor is the fuel rail is different but is their any difference in the actally motor itself. the reason i am asking this is i have a 2003 eco and i need another motor for a project i am working on and i can get a 2002 eco but i wanna know if the bottom end on the 02 is different.

any help would be awesome..

p.s. i have done some research and that how i found the fuel rail difference but i was cuious about anything else

If you mean pistons, rods, rings, crank, balance shafts, bearings..

The parts are all the same from 2000 to 2006.

Correct but I'd like to add something...

There was a page I found a LONG time ago that explained every change that GM made every year the ECOTEC motor was in production. It's my belief (might not be popular belief) that every year the ECOTEC was out, the stronger it is because of the changes...so that would mean the 2006 is the strongest, 2002 is the weakest. I have different ways of proving this in real life situations but hadcore evidence...I just have to find that page again.

Agreed.. but the the changes where mainly to upper engine, like TB, fuel rails, injectors, IM, and such.

there were also changes for better oiling too. it wasnt all just upper end stuff. it was stuff to make it stronger from the get-go.

maybe that explains why my 04 is so freakishly strong!!

You think yours is freakish...my friends 05 ran 15.3 stock...my other friends 05 is running 15.0 with a cat-back & intake...

Sorry to say but that is not correct. I don't know if that is an assumption, but my GM parts catalog has no such evidence of the bottom end part numbers changing over the years. No matter what vehicle the engine is in.

The parts for the bottom end of the ecotec are the same since 2000. The only difference is the oil pan baffler which changed in 2005 Ion, 05 Vue, and 03 L series.

The parts I named earlier, is fact; those parts have not changed ever since 2000. That includes cams, valves, head, valve cover, cam bearings, block, valve springs, followers, and alot more. Which I do not want to keep listing parts all day.

NJHK, are you sure you aren't thinking about the article called Rebuilding the Quad 4? http://www.babcox.com/editorial/ar/ar49935.htm That's the only article I've seen that's listed a break down of the changes that evoloved for a GM 4 cyl engine.

Positive...I would never confuse the Quad 4 for the ECOTEC

how would making the engine oil better change any part numbers? it doesnt. could be something as simple as drilling a passage .015in wider or .025in deeper in. i know the article he's refering to and there was def mention of changes to improve the oiling of both the upper and lower end components....not a bad thing to have either.

if you notice i never said they changed any parts. just said they made it stronger. better oiling = stronger motor BTW

i know what Hypsy is talking about GM tested the Ecotec early on and said it was only good for 283 HP with nitrous but Hypsy and a few others are pushing over 300 whp on there stock internals boosted and yea theres a difference in how the power is added but still

If modifications were made at factory level to the block or any components in the engine.. The part numbers would change to represent the new part that has changed. Meaning, if the block itself was redesigned, the block would have a different p/n than the block that didn't have anything done previously. That is how GM manufacturers set up the parts and p/n. Also, the block is a preformed mold that aluminum gets poured into to make the different sections of the block.

Most likely, changing the specifications of the block would change the preformed mold. Therefore changing the p/n of the block, becuase they would've had to make a new mold.

I would really like to see this article as well.

Jason, There are lots of 04-05 ecotecs in central FL area. www.car-part.com
05's range from $450-$1200.
04's range from $350-$1200

Thats for a whole engine. Doesn't seem to be any salvagers selling just the block.
