97 2.2 ---> 2000 2.4 swap HELP!!
Friday, November 11, 2005 9:16 AM
hey all, my 2.2 is toast, looking to swap a 2.4 into the car. If I get a 2000 2.4 engine/tranny/ecm/wiring harness is that all I need or do I need the body harness too? along with the bcm? Im aware of needing the hoses/fuel lines etc. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks

Jon

I'm not 100% certain on this.... because I have limited experience (and honestly, there aren't that many people that have tried to make it work, without swapping everything...)

I did the "swap everything" method. Pain in the ass. There's more to it... the brake module, the airbags... big pain in the BUTT!!

I figured... if you used a 1999-2002 2.4L engine (they're all the same, except for the first O2 sensor... one wire in 99, two wire in 00-02).... you could use the 99 PCM and just plug and play to most 96-99 cars. No BCM.. no cluster swap.. no airbags.. etc. Save money!

So you go from a 97 2.2L engine harness, to a 99 2.4L engine harness. The 97 and 99 are damn close, if not pinned exactly the same in the engine bay-to-dash/body harness plugs. 2000 things move around, and you have to repin or swap the whole works.

Make sense?

Unless, of course, you wanted to bolt on the GM supercharger package and use the reflash. Then you have to change EVERYTHING. It's not cheap.. airbags suck. The 2000 module is specific to just 2000.. usually go for $125 or more on Ebay as it is. Took me a year to find one!!

Thanks for the info John, thats what i was looking for. I guess Ill keep on looking for an engine then. The place I found the 2000 engine said 1200 for engine/tranny/wiring harness/and ecu and its only got 46k, but if "I have to re-wire everything, screw that. Thanks!!

Just a lil info..

Im going from a 97 2.2 auto to a 99 2.4 auto.. I bought the following parts for my swap

Engine
Tranny
99 auto wiring harness
and i already have the z24 gauge cluster.

If you do the 00 swap, you'll need everything John mentioned above.. Plus the master cylinder and I BELIEVE the fuel tank.(Correct me if Im wrong) Youll also need the dash harness to make it work with the 00+ gauge cluster..

In my opinion it wouldnt be worth the swap UNLESS you have a complete donor car you can use..

If you have the 4spd, we are doing the same swap. im going 97 2.2 auto to a 99 2.4 auto, as soon as I can find a good engine. now I have a 96 z24 cluster will that work with my swap? It doesnt like my 2.2 the trac control doesnt work with the 96 cluster in it, I wasnt sure if thats because my car isnt a Z or if its because the cluster is a year older than my car.

^^ My cluster came out of a 96 Z and I never had problems with it.. Im not sure what your trac control issue is about.

Red - He is buyin' everything part by part instead of a donnor car. It is harder to find everything, but then again it is hard to find a 96-99 donor car for really cheap like I bought my girls car after someone hit me in it. So you have to keep checkin' everywhere you can. David might be able to hook you up with the same place he got his transmission so cheap from. Take your time and you will get it. It just takes a lot of time without a full donnor car.

^^ Exactly Trey, too bad I didn't have a donor car or Id be a hell of alot farther along. Im still buying stock accessories for the engine.

But I found my engine by going to www.car-parts.com.. Plug in your info and go from there. Thats what I did, and how I found my engine from a local salvage yard.

I used car-part.com, thats where I found the 2000 2.4, im so disapointed that would be such a pain. cuz 1200 was for the engine with all sensors and accessories and the ecu wiring and tranny. how hard is it to re-pin lol!

If you swap from an auto to manual, dont forget that you will need the tranny mount brackets and that you will have to weld them to the body. if your 97 2.2 is a manual and you swap to a 2000 manual, you will need to cut out the rear tranny mount bracket and buy the 2000 and up rear tranny mount bracket from GM. You will also have to move the whole in the front tranny mount bracket for the bolt an inch or so forward.

its a pretty good deal......... buy it, sell the wire harness and ECU........ and pick up a wire harness and ECU from a 97-99 Z...... (pref. a 99.... no egr)...... might actually make a couple bucks.....

so the actual engines/sensors are the same? I thought there was some issue with a 1 wire knock sensor on one engine and a 2 wire on another. Am I just confused?

Ok, one sensor to replace

The 2000 is a two wire, 99 is one. I don't know if the 97 2.2L sensor will work in the 2.4L manifold.
