auto vs. manual

I have an automatic...I know, I know! I am buying a wrecked cavi with an ecotec to be built. I was thinking if I was to buy one that was a 5 spd. If and how hard it would be to swap it. On the other hand I was told by some that an A/T would be better. That brings up another question: If I should stick with an A/T what kind of upgrades should I do to it while the engines out? i.e. gears, clutch?, flywheel, etc.

I would really like to do a M/T but if an A/T would be better than I'll stick with that!

There isn't really a 'better' or 'best' so I won't really try and say much using those words. I do have a question, it says you have an 03 Cavi in your profile, are your tranny and engine in need of a swap? If they are then just stick the the auto, it'll be much easier to swap. For the manual you'd have to do a good amount of work; I don't have all the details but I think if you search you might be able to find something and see how much work it entails and if its worth it for you.

As far the auto goes, I don't think there's much you can do but I wont' say more than that because I don't want to lead you down the wrong road.

They don't need swapped. The reason I'm swapping thew motor is because I am building up another ecotec and when it's done I'm gonna throw it in. I figured when I pull the motor to swap it, I might could do something with the tranny. My main question was this:

"WILL THE 4 SPD A/T HOLD UP TO THE POWER?"

oh and by the way I only plan on getting the hp somewhere between 400hp & 500hp

yeah I know...."only"...lol

I know in the "Ecotec bible" form GM Racing they do mention a little bit about stuff to do to the 4T65E. But I havent found anything on how much it can handle or if it's smart to use it on a highly tuned ecotec.

Well I haven't heard of anyone running that much power with their Cavi. I know the 4T40E can handle a good amount of power (I know a few J's running around far above 200 whp) but you have to take the right steps. Switch to synthetic tranny fluid and get the largest tranny cooler you can get. If you'll be running that much power I'd worry about everything, especially the axles, suspension, brakes, etc. As far as what can handle that MUCH power, I can't tell you, sorry bro. Hopefully some other guys who have more knowledge and experience with those numbers will post up.

Yes...I'd honestly say Mid 200s but watch how hot your transmission gets.

That's gonna take alot of boost and a ton of money to do something like that. You've been warned lol

I believe the GM Racing cars that have that transmission have modified tranny internals, not stock.

In my honest opinion, unless you can do some kind of bargain shopping and have some type of hook up with installation, you're gonna be paying out the nose for someone to install it because most shops hate doing auto to manual swaps and unless you can get a donor car, finding all the parts will be kind of tricky.

I'm not gonna give up on the 4T40E transmission...keep an eye out for me

I have a shop locally that desperatly wants to get their hands on a car with an ecotec so they can see what they can do with it. I asked them about the 4T65-E's capabilities and they had no idea...however they also said if I wanted to swap it they would do it. They would let me work with them to bring the cost down alot. Like I said they just want to play with the car...lol

I think if you took the time to have your transmission fully built, it could handle the 400 or 500 HP but honestly, you're gonna be spending a ton of money on a turbo setup, motor rebuild, tranny rebuild and tuning. You gotta ask yourself if it's worth it.
