Buying a 97' Z24 5 Speed....
Sunday, November 27, 2005 8:18 PM
Anything I should look/Check for B4 I buy it? My Cousin has a 96' Z24 5 Speed and he has already gone through 2 trannies. The diff keeps going out on him. Is this Normal for the 2.4L 5 Speeds to have this problem? I don't wanna buy this car and then have tranny Probs...... Also.... this may be a VERY dumb question, but does the 97' Z24's still have the 2.4L in them? I'm sure they do.... just thought I would ask. I'm a J-body NoOb.

Thanks guy's,

-Joe

96-01 Z24 = 2.4 DOHC Twin Cam. 95 Z24 = 2.3 DOHC Quad 4 LO

I was a retard, and now I'm permanently banned.

Does that LO stand for low output?

Actually they used the 2.4L Twin cam from 96 up untill the first half of 2002, then they switched motors to the 2.2. ecotec in the second half of 2002, so it is possible to find an 02 with a twin cam, kinda of an oddball but they are out there.

It is possible to find a 02 with a 2.4 I just got an engine and tranny form one so you can find them it is rare but possible I was just really lucky to find one in a junk yard in good condition good luck finding one and also if its a 4 door it is possible for it to still be a z24 2.4l

Me personally id go for 98-02 I heard that GM improved the waterpump after 98 and it seems to work better, so you won't have anything to worry about. But if the waterpump was changed on the 97 that you want to purchase then you should be fine because its probably the updated design, otherwise keep it maintained oil, tuneups, tranny oil especially for the 5 spd. You should be fine, don't abuse it!!!!!!!!!!

Yes I know. But for the pure fact of the rarity of the 02 LD9... I didn't include it.

paying well over 6k for my 98 Sunfire GT.. More than likely, the reason why the tranny went out is cause he didnt take care of it. Mine has 86k miles on it, and as far as i know, its the original tranny, no issues, changed the fluid shortly after i bought the car using GM's Synromesh.
