Found the radiator cap it was about 15' from the car . Got the exhaust back on and have a exhaust doughnut ordered , it should be in tomorrow morning . The exhaust resonator cut out all opf the raspy sound you hear when people put different mufflers on V6's . It sounds like a V8 and that sort of killed my next dream . Because anyone that pulls up beside it will know it is'nt the usual Cavalier .

Anyway I efilled the radiator and bled the system . I am working on tuning the computer now . Well not at this minute , I will probably take some time off this week to tune it and get the brakes replaced . Then I will get the inspection done .

After I get it on the road I will then be able to set up the data logger and tune it on the fly . Or have my friend drive while I screw with it . I should contact HP Works and take the car there , they have a dyno and install these units . They would know exactly how to zero everything in .

As soon as I get the idle right and fix the exhaust leak I will get some video WITH SOUND . I tell you this does'nt sound like any V6 I have heard ( at least on the street ) . Mantaparts did the cam that is in the car . I can say when it is idling low you can hear it loping .

The engine has these mods right now , so those who have stock V6's running could have an idea what it may be like with what I have done .

Reworked the intake to accept 75mm T/B from an LS6
reground cam from Mantaparts
stage 2 clutch from SPEC
complete TEC3 engine management system
3" mandrel bent exhaust
3" in/out magnaflow high flow cat. conv.
36" 3" in/out magnaflow resonator
3" in / 2.5" out flowmaster series 80 muffler
27Lb injectors
made my own intake which is 3.5" aluminum tubing
K&N cone filter with prefilter

The car rev's very quick , I am sure it will do even better once the TEC3 is tuned and setup right .

Last but not least I need to get in touch with Loyd Marcumm . Last year he bought the dogbone off of the car when I was going to make another on for mine since I did'nt see getting mine running anytime soon . Well the car is running and I don't have my lower dogbone mount anymore . You can see it with the engine shake .

Try to find his e-mail address and see if he still has it . He had a V6 in his 4 door Cavy W/ an auto . He said the dogbone worked pretty good . He removed the engine to save gas and contacted me sometime ago that someone else wanted it . Not sure what ever happened with it .

Oh Yeah the radiator cap did shoot up I remeber seeing it fly up on top of a plume of anti-freeze and steam . It hit the hood in slow motion then disappeared . Did'nt realize it shot by my head whilst I was turning to get away . But it flew over another car and landed out in the yard behind it . In all the commotion I only got 3 drops of anti-freeze on me . Not bad for a guy standing beside the car when it popped off .

ROFL, nice. Video would be awesome. I'd have gotten vids of mine, but alas.... no camera. Good thing you found the cap, it may come in handy.

About the lower dogbone mount. Do you have the diagram of that adapter you designed for that. I used that for my swap, but over time and the total destruction of windows. One re-format later, I lost it. I do have it printed around here somewhere though.

big picture of lower dogbone mount

I knew having a website for this thing would be handy . Had this uploaded and sort of hidden on the site . Anyway I am trying several other bin files and seeing which works the best . The current one is actually following what the book says on tuning the TEC3 .

Well its late and I am outta here

Update on my V6

Well I have the engine starting and running pretty good now . But the IAC was shot , I figured this out after hooking up another one and seeing that it did move . But the one for the LS1 T/B would not do anything and the car would idle at 3,000 to 4,000 RPM's . Anyway in about 8 hours of this post the new IAC should be here and ready to install .

For people thinking the 75mm T/B would be to much for the 3400 . The throttle response seems VERY good . When you rev the engine you can see the engine RPM's climbs very quick . I believe the T/B will work great The cam also seems to be doing good . I adjusted the pulse offset time by 3ms and the engine began running smoother . I also rewired the IAC and it seemed to help by dropping the RPM's down to around 1,500 to 2,000 RPM's . But the IAC is not doing a full extension to close all the way . So it is getting replaced ,

Once I get the engine to idle I can work on acceleration enrichment and the deceleration enrichment . But that can wait because once I get it to idle and run right I can take some video of it . You know what that means , it will get posted .

P.S. I will be building another intake for the T/B . When I built the first one the flange warped a little which caused a nasty intake leak ( which is fixed now ) . But the next intake will be a better design , and will be built to look more factory ( but powder coated ) .

Until later today

Mr goodwrench, can you post a pic of the clearance between the a/c dryer and alternator? Can the dryer stay there or does it have to be moved. I went to your site, Nice neat swap. Im confused though, I saw a photo of a stick flywheel, then what looked like an automatic bolted in there. Are you using the auto?

The dryer is far enough away that it can stay right where it is at .

The alternator is not on in these pic.s , but you have plenty of room if you decide to leave the A/C on the car .

Anyway I worked on the car today . I kept having a problem with the timing being retarded to much . I turned the engine over to TDC and checked the trigger wheel . Surprise !!!!! when the trigger wheel was mounted it was mount to the crank pulley about 40* retarded of TDC . The engine was running ???

I remarked the trigger wheel and redrilled the holes and reinstalled the wheel . The engine runs great now and tomorrow I will get some video of it . I need to also drain the tank and get rid of the old gas . But the video will be of it running on gas that is over 1 to 1.5 years old . The engine sounds like there is a S/C bolted on when you rev the engine and it is reving down you hear a whining sound .

One problem I am having is from the A/C compressor clutch dragging . Every once in a while I hear a scraping sound . It will be fixed when I remove the A/C components . I need to pick up an A/C deletion pulley or make one . Also need to tighten up the V-bands to seal up the exhaust .

I will need to come up with some webspace to upload the video to so everyone can see and hear this thing run .

Thanks.

That lower torque mount that you had on there. Would it work if it was cut, move the U for the dogbone over then reweld it. And will the a/c compressor still bolt on. If so what year, make and mod is it from.

Robert, on the 3400 you do not need to get an AC delete pulley. I dont have one on mine. Not all 3400's have it. Depends on what it came out of. I think yours came out of the Impala, so you probably dont (I think that's a car without) But on say... the Grand Am (where mine came from) there's an extra pulley on the timing cover. This makes it possible for you to run NO A/C and NO delete pulley.

Check out www.domesticcrew.com

I know the info on that is most likely posted on there. I think you may just be able to buy that pulley at a GM dealer and put it on. I'm not really sure, cuz like mentioned, my motor already had the pulley, so I didnt need to go through this process.

Re: some progress info on the V6 swap

The A/C compressor will still work with the dogbone mount installed . It will also use the original J-body dogbone on the V6 . In the picture on the website , the dogbone pictured is one for a Grand Am . It would be to much trouble to rework it to make it work . So I custom made one

Here is the dogbone mount you see in the pictures before the install . After it was in you can see the dogbone is way off . Another thing is the mount only uses two bolts to mount it to the engine . Notice how far out the factory mount sets . Also it is a two piece mount which would make it hard to rework to fit the setup .

As you can see the new dogbone mount is out of the way of everything . From what I have heard it works great . It is made of thicker material than factory , and has more mounting points

This dogbone mount lines up with the stock dogbone and will even work with the polyurethane dogbones .

The flywheel is for a manual tranny and the tranny being used is a F23 Getrag which came in the car . No did'nt use an automatic , would have been a lot easier in the long run if I had used one .

When I first started the install I found out that the setup that is used in the Impala's would not work in the J-body's . I had to redo the belt routing around the pulleys . To look at the engine now you would think it came out of a Grand Am , Grand Prix or even an Alero . I have installed the idler pulley that sets about 2:00 of the crank pulley and a new tensioner to set the serpentine up like what would be found in those vehicles .

I have thought about getting a shorter belt but don't really think it would work right . The water pump would not make any contact and the tensioner would be uselesswithout an idler pulley in place of the A/C compressor .

OK I opened another browser window and checked around . Motormite makes an A/C bypass pulley for the 3400's . You can pick one up at Advance Auto for around $36.00 . Guess what I am doing tomorrow ?

Anyway back to the cavy ,
the latst update is the engine was running around 40* retarded . This morning I got the engine back on TDC and checked the trigger wheel . It was out very far , I remarked the pulley and the trigger wheel and redrilled the mounting holes . Now the car is very close to what it needs . It is about 1.5* advance I am going to mechanically advance it in the morning to get the 8* to 14* it needs . Also get the video of it running , in the video hopefully you will be able to hear the engine when it revs up . The sound you will hopefully hear after the gas is let off will make people flip thinking it is super charged .

My bad the factory mount does mount to the engine with 3 bolt's not 2 as stated in the previous post .

Anyway I like my setup better than the factory mount . LOL

For anyone who's curious, this is the mount that I use in my setup. And yes, it works flawlessly.

But the A/C thing gets me. I know I have mine routed around there like the guys with the 2nd gens and no A/C do, and it works just fine.

Before you put the engine in the car is a very good time to clean it up. As i've probably suggested (dont know if I posted it or not) Since the 3rd gen 60 Degree V6 has problems with the intake gaskets before you put the motor in you should be changing them. So while you have it apart, might as well go and clean it up too. When you refill the coolant, I reccomend flushing the system thoroughly and refilling with green coolant. None of that Dexcool junk. Mine is nice and clean looking too. Should have seen the thing when I got it after it sat in the GA in the junk yard with no hood for God knows how long.

Another good thing to keep an eye on is the PS pump. It may be limited to just the N-body cars such as the Grand Am. I've heard they have a problem with if you hit a curb with the front tires, that it can easily break the shaft in the PS pump. Most likely your donor car has been wrecked. Probably on the front end, so it's a large possibility that the steering system has taken a good shock which may have broken the pump. Might be a good idea to replace that as well. If you dont want to, check the pump with the belt off and make sure that it spins freely with no play.

Well I got some video of the car running and idling . My biggest problem is I only had a DVD camcorder . I got great picture quality and a very large file to boot ( 136 megs for about 3 minutes ) . Even on the lower setting the file came out at a wopping 63 megs . I have been trying to find a program that would convert VOB files to MPEG or AVI .

Well I may use a lower quality device to get some video . The only other option would be to use my cellphone which would allow me to take several minutes of video using about 4 / 5 megs . To me that would work good for people with dial up .

I have looked at my car again and it will need an A/C delete pulley . If I ran the belt without it it would barely run on the water pump . I will order it Monday and it should be here by Tuesday . Hey for $36.00 I could'nt make one for that much . I will also try again Monday on getting some video using the phone and seeing how it turns out .

Well everyone I would have gotten a better ( smaller video ) Monday . But if anyone has seen the Weather Channel then you can see we have been getting crapped on . It has rained every day since Saturday night . This morning the sun actually came out and the sky was blue .

I will get a smaller video this Friday when I get off of work . Hope the rain stays away now , it sucks when you finally get something running and can't work on it .

OH yeah just think , on July 4th it was 3 years to the date that the 4 cylinder was pulled and the V6 started calling my Cavalier home . The engine started up and ran for the first time just shy of that date by 3 weeks .

For most people they would have given up and moved on . The car would have been in the classifieds as PROJECT CAR NEED TO SELL BEST OFFER . But I did'nt give up and I knew in the beginning it was not going to be easy . But now it runs and smokes the tires ( yes both of them ) . Even if it still needs tuning the car will lay down some rubber . Something the 4 cylinder never could do .

Once the car is on the road , the next thing is the body work . Wait till the body work is done , you think the V6 is overkill !!! The body will be even more of an attention getter .

Robert - Have you drove that when it's wet yet? Since you have gotten lots of rain. Just curious if yours seems like it's excessively easy to spin the tires when the pavement is wet. Like, to the point that you're getting pissed cuz you're doing whatever you can not to, and it still does it.

Update on mine..... I went out the other day jumped in cuz I was gonna run down and get some food. Figured I'll get some more run time on it. I jump in, put it in neutral, press on the clutch, turn the key.......

CLICK! wtf??

stupid starter. Guess it'll be another trip to AutoZone in the GTP for a new starter. No big deal I guess. It's something that I looked at and wondered exactly how long it would last.

No have'nt hit the roa with it yet . But I do run it up and down the driveway some . I have been working some small issues out right now . Today I finally worked on getting the alternator to charge . I also checked on the A/C delete pulley and was told that it was on back order and to check back in about 5 weeks . I know they have one someplace because on line it does not say out of stock on Advance's website .

On to other matters because the video is very big for only 2 to 3 minutes of shooting . I opted for now to do a sound clip . Once it is posted I will get the link posted . It also came out pretty good to have been recorded with my cell phone . Also I figured out what was wrong with the gauges not wanting to light up . Had the damn plug in backwards on the gauges cluster .

Anyway I have a snap shot of them lit up .

The gauges are straight in the cluster but the angle I shot the pic from makes them look funny . Also the A/F gauges shows it running rich . But from what I have read the TEC3 does that when it idles ???? don't know why I runs where you want it to once you hit the gas , but at idle it wants to run rich .

It may be the old gas screwing with it causing it to act up . Anyway tomorrow morning I am dropping the tank to replace the fuel level sending unit and replace the old gas after draining everything out .

Re: some progress info on the V6 swap

Hmm...... How warm was the car when you took that shot? Does it start to sweep once its warmed up? When you're cruising it should sweep. At WOT it should run back to rich. Course, it dont sound like you've had a whole lot of time to do tuning on it.

Im wanting to do custom gauges like that. Anything specific I would need in the way of a Fuel level and Speedometer? And what did you do, make a template of the stock cluster and cut holes in it?
