1996 2.2L 5speed 4 door sedan, bought it for $500 last fall with about 162,000 on it, replaced plugs, wires, front rotors and brake pads. needs exhaust work a lil and rust repair on the bottom of the doors, and one door replaced. i removed the rear seat and belts, and put on a different shift knob thats a lil heavier and can throw it better. 78mph uphill in 4th and the car has no tach....just going on 166,000 miles now. Daily driver.
Did smoke a Supra too!
If the engine does go, can get a 2.2L ecotec with trans to swap in for $500
, or...

i got a 95 2.2l with 215thousand and change on it and the first motor was pulled at 200000 the only reason i pulled it was because i got to power hungry and tried to make it push to much i had it with almost double the compression and a 150 shot it ran for about 40000 with all that till a rod snapped and the piston shattered oops just for the record the compression was 180psi in the lowest cyl and 195psi in the highest so they are strong motors
i gots 190xxx km on my 972.2... original motor, tranny, clutch. im waiting for something to go the way i bag my car

This post has been around quite a while. Just thought I'd add a little extra to it.
SHOoff's 2.2
Purchased 63,000 miles (just out of factory warranty YAY!)
Abused since
Tranny replaced at slightly before 100,000 miles
Also upgraded to a Stage II clutch
YTD: 145,000 miles (roughly)
Engine BLOWN
Poor thing, it blew bad too. Quite a few problems with it actually. Not worth repairing the current engine. Performance parts have been sold, Engine to be replaced with 3.1L V6

I've got a '96 4dr w/3sp auto with 176+k, aside from usual maintainace, I've replaced the timing chain(135k), alternator and fan relay. My soon to be Ex, abused the hell out it. Finally died when she blew a hose and kept driving it. The cylinders only show about 0.0015" wear. I haven't gotten to the bottom end yet, but I'll let you know how the bearings look after "Frances" blows by. BTW lots of mods coming with the rebuild.
170,xxx on my 95 5-speed....still runs perfect
