2.2L ohv life expectancy?
Monday, May 14, 2007 11:47 PM
Hey guys, wondering how long the engine in my Sunfire should last, its got about 92,000kms on it, year is 2000. Third owner, second owner was my parents, and first was our friends. Car hasn't been sh*t hauled. Just wondering how long it should last. I love my car, runs good, rides nice, isn't in too bas a condition for a 7 year old. Car is regularly serviced and checked...

Generally, a well maintained, well treated 2.2 OHV can last 250,000+ miles.

If you drive around and hit the rev limiter, every day.... trust me that it's life expectancy gets a whoe lot shorter.

We have rev limiters? I thought we only had goveners for speed...
What is the rev limit? ( so I dont hit it of course )

i had a 99 sunfire 2200/3spd, got it new, traded it in with 115,000 miles, still running great. i ran it pretty hard too. however i did keep it well maintained, and used synthetic oil since day 1.

Rev limit is at 6250rpm. If you do hit it, all it does it turn off fuel injectors for a second, which will make the engine stutter (since no fuel) and it wont rev any higher.

I maintain mine well, but drive it hard. 100k miles recently and no problems. Not even a vapor of a leak, this thing is clean!!

114k miles and going till it is no longer fixable, then thinkin about engine swap... lol (i need this to last as long as possible!!) i had to replace the ac condensor, and found out i need new rear shoes, wheel cylinder, serp. belt. praying that nothing else major goes out on me.

(if anyone has any ball park estimates for the rear shoes and cylinder, please pm me)

Mine quit at 76k, but judging from the sludge build up I found on the head, it was abused before I put my 45k on it.

I'm up to 186k miles on my 00', but it hasn't been drove since I got a new car. No engine troubles yet, but had to replace fuel pump and radiator. It still runs good though.

245,000 kms ( 153,125 miles. ) and runs sweet. Never hit the rev limiter, regular maintenance. It's a 2000. I hope to get another 250,000 out of it!!

Mines a little under 260,000km... and it still runs awesome. The fuel pump was changed last year but so far, really, nothing major has went wrong with it. The guy who did my emissions test last year asked me if I was selling it and when I asked why, he told me my car had better emissions than some new cars. I've still got the test results paper laying around somewhere... I mean, honestly, it depends how well you treat your car... So take care of it and you'll get good life out it.

97 2.2 has about 170,000 and the last 80,000 miles i've been rough on it, numerous rev limiter hits, and it still runs great, no problems out of it yet. other than the cv joints they went out this past weekend. but they were still the original ones. all ive done is change the timing chain, and a battery. i just done the chain at 150,000 just for good measures. i changed the valve cover gasket too, but that was just to keep the engine clean. cai. 2.75 exhaust, 4-2-1 header and 8mm accel wires. i love this little car. never had any problems out of it. yet

I am curious what were the symptoms that led to the fuel pump replacement? I am thinking my '99 2.2 need a fuel pump but I am getting no CEL and the dealer did not find any faults after complete diagnosis at the dealer?!
