What trips the cluster "brake" light?
Monday, January 24, 2011 8:41 AM
96, sunfire, 2.2, 3T40.
My dash "brake" light came on last week. So far I have checked:

fluid is topped off,
hand brake is all the way down,
no DTC's,
pedal is solid

Does anyone know of any other things that would turn that light on? Or have any past experience with this?

I serviced the front last year and the back still looked fine then.
ABS relay is pulled out, but has been for 3 months...

Thanks,

The actual fluid level sensor in the master cylinder reservoir could be sticking or bad. Try tapping on the reservoir gently and see if the light goes out.

If that doesn't work take off the center console real quick and see if something made it's way down onto your e-brake lever where the contact switch is for the light. Who knows, something may have slipped in there.

Does anyone know if the switch in the master is normally open or closed? I unplugged it and nothing changed, In a ford I had, the switch started leaking so I took it out and put a plug in, with the switch unplugged the light was off. but I don't know if my sunfire is like that or not?

Thanks, I'll check the e-brake lever next.

Looked through all the wiring diagrams I have and I'm not able to find the park brake switch on there. Unless I'm just overlooking it a lot. Looks like most switches on the car are normally open. But I wouldn't count that as any evidence. Best thing I suppose is to dig down and look.
