2.2 won't stop leaking fuel from fuel injectors
Tuesday, April 19, 2011 12:36 PM
My #2 and #4 fuel injectors won't stop seeping fuel from the top of them. To date, I have replaced the injector O rings at least 4 times to stop this problem. Tried a different brand every time. This last go-around, I went to the junk yard, and got that piece of crap metal piece that holds the injectors down off a Cavi that had never had the piece removed before.... It (the junk car) was still holding fuel pressure at the rail. Put that on my car, along with brand new AC Delco O rings, and the damn thing still seeps out gas. Any suggestions on what to do? It isn't spraying fuel or pouring out, just seeping out enough to where you can smell the fuel.

Are you putting a light coat of oil on the O rings?

This is common on the side feed injectors. Just lube them up and use a gentle touch. I take a deft touch to get them to seat right. Do it enough and you get to know how it feels when the slip in right. It's a PITA till you get the feel.

I'm gentle putting them in. Gotta be to get that stupid metal rail to line up right and not bend it. I haven't been lubing them, just normal oil ok? Guess I'll order another set of AC Delco rings.

Chances are since your not lubing them you are probably lightly tearing them. Also look to make sure there isn't a bur that is compromising the o-ring.

I have vasoline, I will give that a shot when I order them next. There aren't any burs, I've checked several times. Thanks for the tips.

Your problem is likely bad injectors. GM used a bottom feed design on these cars with a plastic top where the terminals are located. Over time (and probably ethanol in the fuel), the plastic breaks down and develops microcracks in the area where the injector mount plate holds them down. You'll smell and probably see the top of the injector wet with fuel after running the engine a short time. New OEM injectors are over 100.00 each; if your only keeping the car a short time, you can try some from a junkyard.

I just had one of these last week...........seals don't work, only replacement of the injector.

I paid $350 for the car... no way in hell I'm spending $400 for new injectors. Gonna try lubing the O rings this next go-around...

Ya lube them, there's no way to get those objectors in without tearing the o ring and have no lube.... At least your not forgetting the bottom o ring... That was fun to watch the "smartest" tech in the dealer burn the bosses car down.....

I did not lube mine (but she did) lol, and it went in fine, did not tear.

I'm thinking you need replacement injectors.

Hit up the junk yard, got some "new" injectors (with the low low mileage of 213K), lubed the O rings with vasoline, and bam, no more leaks. I really wanted to find some injectors with lower miles on them, but with it being 105*, I was just happy to find some that would work.

FYI guys, you typically don't want to lube any rubber or o-rings with petroleum based products. It makes them swell out and stop sealing on the inside. I know some are o rings are silcone based, but sometimes it is hard to tell - I always used silcone lube for all o rings as it is compatible with everything as far as I know.

I've heard of it happening on other 2.2s... I blame it on GM's crappy design.

i did my #2 injector twice before figuring out it was the injector itself. I couldn't see it, but somewhere it had a fine crack and was seeping fuel enough to smell it when you were stopped at a light or just shut it off.

I had, (well hope its had, and not have) the same problem. I thought it was a leak around the #1 injector, so I replaced all the o rings to no avail. I replaced the injector today and noticed these small stress cracks on the injector body.
