pull the bottom half up and there are four bolts holding the top half on

no no. Tilt the rear seat at a 45 degree angle, and on the passenger side down by where it rotates on the bottom there is a little black clip. Pop that clip off the slide the seat towards the passenger side and then pull the other side out and then pull the whole seat out.

I still don't really understand how to get the seat out.

Mixed info.

How do I even get the bottom of the rear seat up? What kind of clip is it? Which piece am I putting at a 45 degree angle to get to said clip? Etc. etc.

You only asked how to remove the top part so that is how I answered. If you can't get the top part out with the info I gave you then you might be out of luck.

Baby steps

Put the rear seat down... look at the 'peg' it swivels on, on the passenger side. There's a black plastic clip. Remove the black plastic clip. Then put the seat at a 45-degree angle and slide the upper part of the seat towards the passenger side (where the clip was). The driver's side of the seat should pop off the metal peg on the driver's side. Pull the seat forward a little bit on the driver's side, and pull the passenger side off the other peg.

What about if you have the 60/40 rear split like on the 03-05's? just the bolts?
