Well, the first question is which engine do you have? the 3100 or the 3800?

Then, chose on of the first two stickies at the top, and go from there.

What transmission are you using? 4t60e? I believe that the output shaft on those will accept the J-body axles, but I'm not 100% on it.

Just for the information on the swap in general, though, the ouput side of the transmissions do not vary between the 2.4 and 2.2 vehicles. The only difference in on the input side, because the engines have different bellhousing patterns. You just need to verify that the J-body axle will mate to the 4t60e transmission.

On another note, fitting that transmission in there will be tight. It's larger than the 4t40e found in the J-body.

From this thread, just a few posts up:

People, if you can't read stickies, or even posts in questions threads, how do you expect to be able to do a swap like this? It takes an attention to detail that seems to evade many on these forums.

OK 3800 MOUNTS IS THERE ANY CERTAIN MOUNT THAT YOU GUYS CAN RECOMMEND??
Re: swap question!!

1st of all the 95 has a series 1 motor which is a gutless motor a 3400 in will make almost the same power as the series 1 SC 3800 motor. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME

2nd Every mount is custom 1 way or another even more so cause you have a 97.

just do a 3400 swap or spend the extra and buy a series 2 engine

Didn't even catch that your engine is a Series I...yeah, don't bother. You'll get the weight of a large V6 with the power of a small one, for an awful lot of work.

If you're taking offense to people telling you not to bother with that engine, that's simply advice, and no reason to be offended. If you haven't bought it yet, find yourself another donor. Do a 3400 or a Series 2 3800. The 3800 is considerably more weight, and if it barely puts out more power than a lighter one that needs less work, why would you want to do it?

I understand that I've been reading a lot into this swap and after I looked at the car I knew it was the wrong motor.... No I didn't take offence at all if I thought I knew it all I wouldn't ask ... Even been on the furrow forum and found a guy that will do my harness for me once i get every thing together

Also what would be the best tranny to put behind the 3800?

A tranny pre-op is the best tranny.

The GM FWD V6 engines share the same bolt pattern as the OHV 4 cylinder engines ( the two found in the 3rd Generation J-body cars are the 2.2OHV and the 2200)

If you have a car equipped with an OHV engine already, you can retain your existing transmission. If you are swapping to a car with a DOHC engine, you need to swap your transmission as well.

Options for auto are the 4t40e (4 speed auto) that comes in the J, the 4t45e that comes the N body cars. 4t65e or 4t65HD these transmissions are found in W and C body cars, and the 3t40e which is strongly NOT recommended
