ignition cylinder replacement

I have a 97 sunfire 2.2 auto, tilt steering. The key is sticky and I am going to replace the cylinder with a good used one.... I have had other j bodies give me issues with the theftlock (worn out key or something) and I was able to do the re-learn myself and it worked flawlessly. Is this the same re-learn procedure GM quoted me 99$ to do? They called it re-coding. Will I be able to do this myself or is the re-learn different than re-coding? the new(used) cylinder is from a 3rd gen auto with tilt

Have you tried replacing the key? Go to the dealer, spend $10 and get a new one cut from your VIN.

I've never replaced a lock cylinder yet... and I've had 7 J-body cars now. Every one with sticky ignition was fixed with a $2 key.

I just went and did that John, I was fully prepared to start cutting out the old cylinder before I gave it a shot. 38.75$ at the dealer for a key they pulled off the shelf. it works perfect. Returned my $50 used lock cylinder and saved myself alot of time. thanks

$38.75? Damn.

Well.. beats changing the lock when you don't have to.
