I believe the odometer will work fine, but to my knowledge, this has never been tested.
I also believe you could swap the digital odometer into the older cluster, but again, this theory has not been tested.

I have dissected a number of J-body clusters, including 99's with digital odometers, and the odometer hook up to the main board is the same. Since, unlike the 00+ clusters, the 99 still stores the mileage in the cluster, I actually think the memory for this is in the odometer itself, and not the main board. This would make sense because of it plugging in the same way. The mechanical odometer obviously would not use any memory from the main board, so by using the same hookup, it leads me to believe that GM made the odometer independant of the main board.

I plugged in the 97 cluster everything works except gas gauge so I think im gonna have to have a 1999 cluster

The sending unit "Ohms" is different for the fuel tank for 99 and 97.

Damn. I forgot about that part. It changed in 98.5 clusters to a higher resolution.

Mr. Quick,

This is good info in regards to the clusters and the fuel senders. I even verified this by visiting both Autozone and Advance auto online parts and listed the fuel pump & sending units for 1997, 1998, and 1999. The 97 and 98 parts were all identical part numbers but the 99s were all different part numbers across all brands. It did not list 2 types for 1998 so perhaps the 1998 digital clusters still used the old senders maybe?

This kind of agrees with what I have heard about 1998 to 1999 digital odometer cluster swaps working fine except for the fuel gage.

So... if one were to ALSO swap the fuel pump & sender unit from a 97/98 type into a 1999 when swapping in the 1998 cluster would the fuel gage then work correctly?

If anyone know thanks in advance!
