Your auto should be good unless you are going to run some major torque... If you gonna stay under 300 ft lbs. Your cool. You might want to get an Autotrans or a B&M Shift Plus so you can tranfer the power better.

I've more engines go then autos in J-bodies

Ya, what he said. These newer auto tranies can handle serious power, more than the ADVERAGE car nut would put in it. But, try to stay under 300hp and 300tq, just in case.

When did these new transmissions come into affect with the j-bodies, what year i mean

cus my bros 98 Z24 auto really sucks. It doesnt shift to second when u romp on it from a standstill. Pretty good shifting daily driving though. I checked mitchell on demand at school and it shows a bulliten about that problem but 2-3 shift, should be same deal. My brother doesnt drive the car hard so he will never know about that problem and he wouldnt wanna fix something that he doesnt drive hard anyways so its all good i guess.

but ya, was there a new tranny that came into play in the new jbods? or does my brothers car have that transmission also (he has the electronic 4speed/overdrive tranny)

I thought they were still using the same 4t40e's on the 2003+.

Yup...only Auto Trannies ever available in the 3rd Gens were either the 3T40 (3-speed) or the 4T40E (4-Speed)..even up to '05. The Cobalt will be using the 4T45E.

Marty Ladwig's Sunfire Dragster is fitted with a modified 4T65E-HD tranny (production version of this tranny found in the Grand Prix GTP and the upcomming V8 Impala and Monte Carlo...and a few other mid sized GM cars).

Personally I love the 4T40E...the key to a good working tranny is maintenance. All too often people overlook maintenance and wonder why the ol'Hydra-Matic doesn't shift right.

Filter and oil changes should be done every 50,000kms. Especially if you do light towing and hard driving (like I do, lol). The secret to Fluid longevity is keeping it cool too. In most cases, a tranny oil cooler isn't really necessary but doesn't hurt..especially if you live further south than I do, lol.

We do change the tranny fluid regarly, it doesn't do squat about the shifting problem my brother has. It did that since he bought the car. It should be a friggen recall cus ive seen some people with the same problem on this site but i guess it would be too expensive to do and not everyone drives their car that hard.

I have a question tho. WIth my shifting problem metchened above ( not 1st to second shift when flooring the car), do u think the tranny can hold up to a 1st to 2nd shift manually by using the 1, and 2 gear. i wouldnt wanna try that if something is gonna @!#$ up bad. What do you guys think. maybe ill try it at low rpms first or something

As far as I know, the 98 trannies are different then the 03-05 ones. Try the tranny fourm for help.

Manually shifting an automatic doesn't change anything. It doesn't mean the tranny will shift when you want it too. Taking off with the tranny on the "2" doesn't make it take off in 2nd gear. it only means that when the transmission gets to second gear, it won't shift any higher. Same thing for first gear. Set it in first gear and it won't shift into a higher gear.

And going from 1st to 2nd manually doesn't mean that it will shift when you shift. The tranny has to reach its RPM before it will shift. If you have already surpassed that RPM and holding it in that gear, then it will shift whenever you set into a higher gear. Another example is if you floor it and you manually shift from 1st to 2nd at about 4500 rpm...the tranny still won't shift till about 5500-5900rpm because you have it floored.

So, in closing...the manual settings on an auto tranny is simply for keeping the tranny from going into a higher gear than what the shifter stick is set at.

i got a 2002 with Auto tranny, 4 speed, B&M Shift plus. I'm working on the 3400 swap, but i plan on building that motor to about 400 torque. Think the auto will take it or should i get something replaced in it. Or should i swap in the 4t65e from the alero, has a lower final drive but is the rest of the tranny stronger??
