Are 1999 and 2000 2.4 pistons the same??
Thursday, February 17, 2005 9:51 AM
Are the pistons from a 2000 2.4 the same size, stroke, and compression as the ones from a 1999 2.4, just wondering if they are interchangeable

yes and no...half of 99's had dished 9.5:1 pistons...the other half had flat top 9.7:1 pistons...but bore and stroke is the same

dished means the groove on the piston for the valve?

no those are reliefs....dish mean the piston has a slight dish to it....the center is a little pressed in

Thus having the lower compression

Meaning they are interchangable, but if you do change them, you will have to do all 4 since they are slightly different but they will work

Never put used pistons in a motor, chances are you'll have to bore it out a little to clean up the cylinder walls, and after that a set of stock/used pistons wouldn't fit.

I wouldnt say never, it can be done and you will need rings, Ive done it before. Though it was a small 2cyl motor we did it in it still worked fine after we re-ringed it.

no never...not without honing.....you will always have more blow by and the rings will never perfectly set if you just re ring it or swap pistons and rings

heres the thing, i'm rebuilding a 2.4 block and the block will be honed and new bearings and rings, i can get my hands on Low milage 2000 2.4 pisotns, but there is only 3 of them, i'm just wondering if i can use 1 of my 1999 pistons in the block. thanks in advance

No, you can't.

Yes... you cannot mix and match pistons with different compressions. You also do not want to put stock pistons in an engine, since as soon as you hone it out you are removing material from the sidewalls and increasing the piston bore. If you put stock pistons in a honed bore, the pistons will wobble inside the bore and oval out the cylinders, the engine would be toast pretty quick. Thats why you never put used pistons in a motor. Boring is only like $20 a cylinder around me, and probably around you too. New OEM pistons are probably the same cost as aftermarket Wiesco's or JE's if not more, so you really have no excuse to put used pistons into a motor, it really isn't a very bright thing to do. You'll have to end up rebuilding it again, so why pay for it twice?

thanks, i'm glad i found this out before i did it. This motor is being shipped to europe, and you probably saved me a lot of problems, i checked and honing around me is $10 Canadian per cylinder, What bore size would you recomend? 0.10? 0.20? And how much am i looking to spend for new pistons and rods?

you can use used pistons, always when putting a new piston into a engine you should use new rings. Honing simply cleans up the glazing on the cylinder walls it is not a machining process and does not remove metal in the cylinders like one would think. Its a dressing process for final fitment and should be done whether new or used pistons are put in to allow the rings to seat properly.

@!#$, not this again.

99+ 2.4L's in J-cars are all the same. No one has ever proven that a 96-98 style LD9 ever made it into a J-car. N-cars, sure. Even I've seen one. (But only one)

According to GM.. all 99-02 (and 03 by special order) LD9 motors are the same. And have no EGR.

BTW... compression was also affected by the different head, 99+.

Which means... YES 99 and 00 pistons are the same. Someone show me PHOTOGRAPHIC evidence otherwise and I'll eat those words. No more of this "heard about this" bs.

Woah, old thread

Actually, that article tells you what they built the engine with. Not what a stock motor came with.

Look at the other stuff in that article... very little of it is stock. It's all "upgraded parts" using stuff off N and W bodies.

My 2000 had flat-top pistons when I took it apart. Let me find my pictures.

Ok here..

Look... flat top pistons... Just ignore the red circle there... heh...

some one just posted their 98 had flat top pistons. So now the questions is now is did the pistons actually change or was it the head.
