100 Shot on Eco = Bad Idea
Sunday, May 01, 2005 7:31 PM
Hey guys ran a 100 shot on my eco today. first run did alright with low bottle pressure around 600 psi and ran a 13.9. So i was happy and decided to run it again. So the second run i missed third and then got it into third then when i went to slam it into forth. BOOOMMM!! Im like WTF i though i blew a rod but it was still running so i got out and the intake was still together to. So i was like thank god. Got down and looked at my filter and it was all puffed out like a marshmallow. So thats all that happened but scared the crap out of me. So im def. putting the 75 back in and leaving it that way. But the 13.9 is something to brag about now. haha

puddling is fun isn't it

my friend did that at the track with his focus.......his filter was blown clean off the car and he ran it over

i think that has some thing to do with the lope in the cams and the nitrous what kind of fuel were u using im just curious

with that low of bottle pressure and that size shot.... you were running REALLY RICH

it's no wonder you puddled

nice work though

yeah i have the levelzero stage 2 cams and was running 87 octane with the NX octane booster for nitrous. yeah that makes sence since the bottle was low pressure meltdown. oh and on my fuel pressure gauge it reads at 60 psi. i didnt think it was that high.

dude, DON'T USE OCTANE BOOSTER

to actually get up to what most people run (93 octane) you'd have to use MANY MANY bottles of that junk

just pay the extra two dollars per tank at the pump and get the 93 octane dude

Yepper, too low bottle pressure. Bet you were running around 8 or 9:1 A/F ratio at that pressure. Prime circumstances for a nice, loud nitrous backfire. And also, as Meltdown said, spend a couple extra bucks at the pump if you wanna spray. You'll thank yourself later. (and get yourself a bottle heater for crying out loud if you don't already have one!)

Octane booster = Garbage

Premo fuel is the only way to go.

well i dont have the money for a heater yet but we might put a power converter and one of those electric back heater things on the bottle for now. what do you guys think about that? yeah for the octane booster i only have a 1/4 tank and use half a bottle but next time ill go with the 93. my only question is though that it doesnt "ping" on the 87 octane with a 75 shot and no octane booster but i will run the 93 just to be safe. so you guys think the 100 shot should be fine then for a couple of runs with higher octane and higher bottle pressure? what do you run your bottles at? they are suppose to be around 1100 or 1200 psi right? thanks for your help guys

do you have a nitrous pressure gauge? if yes, then the electric back heater thing would work but I DO NOT RECCOMEND IT

you can get an edelbrock bottle heater off of summit for like 140

the reason why they make bottle heaters specifically for nitrous applications is because they are controlled (turned on and off) via pressure or temperature which are completely linear (meaning when pressure is up, so is temp, and vice-versa)

by using the back heater you have no idea what your pressure is at and considering the nitrous bottles can only take so much pressure (insert pic of car with back end blown up here) you don't wanna chance it. that and you'd have to apply heat to the bottle while you're present cause who knows what would happen if you put the heater on and left.... BOOM!

most nitrous systems and heaters run right around 900-1100psi

and i'm not sure i'd recommend a 100 shot on a single fogger with the eco

people have already run into puddling with 75 shots... (brandoson, 04 ecotec ls sport)

but if you want to give it a whirl make sure to have the 93 octane gas, make sure you use the correct jets and make sure your bottle pressure is up because lower bottle pressure means running rich and boom, backfire. also make sure to use a colder plug... like ngk tr6 #4177 or autolite #103 in place of the stockers. colder plugs have nothing to do with spark but they determine how fast the plugs themselves can get rid of heat and considering cylinder temps get REAL high when using nitrous, you want that heat gone as quick as possible.

so...

-93 octane gas
-bottle heater (for consistent pressure)
-different spark plugs
-tow truck waiting for you

yeah i think im gonna use the back heater and i have a pressure gauge on my a pillar so i can keep an eye on it and turn it off at 900 psi incase it rises anymore then that. ill do a 75 shot first cause im guessing when i did it before it wasnt really a 75 shot with that low of pressure. thanks for your help. no aims guys?

No wonder there's so many "I blew my motor on nitrous" posts...

Do you have any timing mods?

I got a used nos bottle heater off ebay for like 40 bucks -- get the correct equipment if you are going to use that much nitrous

no he does not have timing mods and my car backfired one time on the 75 shot b/c the bottle pressure was low

and alot of us hae aim and our sn is listed in our profiles -- please do things the right way I know the eco is a fairly cheap motor to replace but I myself do not want to read the rod went through my block post
