Ecotec Spray Basics?

after 36k miles(warranty is gone then), the plan with my new 05 cavy is to perhaps go with nitrous. I only want a 50 shot, nothing more. so, I am wondering,from all you fellows experienced with spray what must be done to get the engine ready. obviously cooler plugs like ngks, but what else can ensure a healthy engine on nitrous?

also, for the 02+ guys, does the ecotec have a long life on small doses of nitrous? I would most likely be spraying less than once a week in the summer, only when i take it to the track. I dont want to leave it hooked up unless i am at the dragstrip for fear i would street race and also because if i ever get pulled over, it might not be a good thing.

last but not least, wet or dry? I also intend to get a purge for it...not because its needed, it would only be for the "cool factor".

yes i know, do a search, but i just wasnt finding what i was looking for and i had quite a few questions

eh....nothings guaranteed to make it safe for nitrous. just check your fuel pressure (50-60psi), get some ngk tr6 plugs, run 92 octane or better all the time, dont hit the rev limiter while spraying, yada yada...all the basics already listed in these posts. it should be ok to use in moderation with these basics

as for wet vs dry, the ecotec intake manifold is prone to fuel puddling, which can cause an explosive backfire which will simply blow up your intake. usually rather harmless to the engine, but an annoyance. dry kits will not puddle in the intake, but will tend to lean out above a 55 shot on a stock fuel system.

speaking of hitting rev limiter, im almost scared to ask what happens...because if i remember right, rev limiter on these is fuel cut off...no fuel and nitrous...hrmmmm....that would be bad.


as far as the safe thing goes, no mods are safe....cause you start making the engine do more than it was designed to in most cases, any major power adders like boost and spray are unsafe.

i am just wondering, if i am carefull, if my engine can have a long healthy life with a 50 dry shot used only every couple weekends in summertime.

Is there nething wrong with running the higher octane all the time in a daily driver?

no. nothing wrong. just wont help anything. kind of a waste of $ on a near stock motor.

i'd say so. as long as you dont go through a bottle every weekend but its still a gamble nonetheless. as for the rev limiter, you got the right idea. fuel cut + nitrous flow = BOOM

yeah, i will prolly only spray a couple times when i go, so it will take a while to use a bottle i would think...and i am getting a "window switch" for it, so the nitrous will only engage at a certain RPM, say, from 3k rpm to 6500rpm....that way if i miss a shift or do something stupid, i wont lose a brand new ecotec...

OK I go threw about a bottle a week on mine. I use 93 octane and have ngk tr6's. I have a NX wet kit, bottle heater and purge.

I have yet to have any major problems (one time I had the "puddling issue" and my intake blew off) so i put it back on took about 15 sec and was on my way.

I would stongly recomend a wet kit. I have also hit the rev limiter twice and suffered no consequences but a window switch would be a great investment.

Can you please explain the differnces between the dry and wet kits.

dry kits have a mess with the vacuum that goes to your FPR, when you spray, it opens up your injectors....

wet kits spray fuel with the nitrous, not messing with the fpr at all

yeah a wet kit injects fuel and nitrous into your motor where a dry kit injects only nitrous and uses the car's fuel system to compensate

Wet is the way to go as far as im concerned, its much safer than dry, in most people opinions.......... I want to be wet someday.....

problem with wet, are the problems with puddling, cna be fixed with a new intake mani, but they are not that common and cost a pretty penny

Yeah, i was thinking about that.......

Before i throw a wet system on my cav, what could I do to prevent puddling?

I know its kind of a concern to ecotec owners, is it just due to the design on the ecotec Intake manifold or what?

Any way to keep puddling at a minimum?

My Talon never had issues with puddlin so im new to this I guess.......

Happened to me once -- blew my intake off --- you can do direct port or a new intake mani --- that is about it

yep venom is about the only one i know of, I think Exploited was designing one, but I have not heard from Brian on it in a while so I am not sure.

I really like how the venom mani looks, but its a lil pricy.

i read that dry system is safer. also for the fuel, if you use regular fuel, what is the difference to 92+ octane

i had an 05 cavy with a 55 shot dry (zex), i called zex tech support and asked them which was better for the ecotec (wet or dry) and as soon as i said ecotec they said wet.

but needless to say i stuck with the dry and i had no problems but i never went above 55 shot.
