installing new deck on monsoon
Wednesday, July 20, 2005 10:05 PM
i have a 2001 sunfire GT with monsoon system. after reading everything on here saying its fine to remove your factory deck, im gonna do it . but i was just wondering if the monsoon speakers being amped (i believe ? ) is there any complications to installing an aftermarket deck, and ive read something about the power wire having to go to a windshield wiper wire? , i just bought it recently so this is all new to me
so any help plus location of different wires would be great, thx

I did this... but the opposite... I installed a Monsoon system & speakers in my Cavalier with an aftermarket deck... sounds mint!

Get the harness for the aftermarket deck. $20 and get the non-chimes model, or $100 or whatever and get the chime box and relocate the stock deck or not... up to you. Read the sticky.

Get the mount kit, and the antenna adapter.

Depending on the harness you got, you might have to run a switched +12V wire to turn the deck on and off with the car. Or hook the red & yellow together and it stays on all the time. Whatever suits your fancy.

Hook the speaker outputs on the aftermarket deck to the speaker wires on the factory harness. Those all go to the factory Monsoon amp (8 channels) and will all be amplified.

Connect the blue/white wire (for remote turn on of an amp) from the aftermarket deck, to the pink wire in the factory harness. Likely this won't have a wire on the harness plug.. that is the remote turn on for the Monsoon amp. Without it, there's no sound.

Should work for ya...

ok so i went to bestbuy because its local for me, and the only thing for a wiring harness that they had was some bs with the T bar attachment that cost $69.99. i tried to explain to him that he is stupid and doesnt know what he is talking about, but apparently i need all this stuff or my airbags will blow LOL. so ya, anyways, is there a place that carrys just the wiring harness without any bs for like $20???? walmart? futureshop??

Yup, that's what I'm using... used five or six on my cars and my parents cars now over 5 years... no problems, other than the loss of the door chimes (oh, boo hoo..). The airbags is a fallacy. I've done stereo installs on other peoples cars, who have then gone and smashed up their cars (not right away... well... almost) and YES the airbags still work...

Walmart and Crappy Tire selll the non chime harness, these stores are the best to deal with because there is no BS with the sales people telling you their "expert advice" that the airbags blow when the GM owners manual says that the car will lose chimes if the stereo is removed, the don't even specialize in J-bodies, we do!

Again remember to connect the pink wire to the amp turn on from the deck, and everything will work perfectly.

If your concerned with a chimes not working and telling you that the lights are on, head up to Radio Shack and get an aftermarket chime for 10$ and hook it up and you are set.

ok, im a little confused because this is the wiring

instructions say

(i grouped speaker wires together)

then there is

red wire - to ignition key

blue wire - to power antenna

yellow wire - memory back-up 12v

black - ground

so am i screwed because there is no remote wire or what?? :S

r u talking about the remote wire for the moonson amp?

If so just connect a switched 12V wire to the pink wire in the factory harness. And it'll work!

ok so your saying just run a switched 12v wire to the pink wire ,which i cut away from the factory harness? and then can i also tap into that to run a remote wire to my amp for my subs?

yes exactly you can do that, but you can also take the 12V remote wire from your head unit and use it for your aftermarket deck.

what exactly do u mean by that.....

Ok heres what I mean...

There are 2 possibilities here:

1) coming out of aftermarket deck there should be a wire that is used for aftermarket amps, its called a remote turn on wire, you can use that to turn on your factory amp and the aftermarket amp for the subs

2)or you can tap into the wiper fuse (see sticky and Lenkos page) and connect that to the pink wire at the factory harness so it'll turn on the amp.
