Help please. How to install 5way speakers.
Saturday, September 24, 2011 9:55 AM
Hi everyone. I have a problem I hope all of you can help with. I have some new Kenwood KFC-6982ie 6x9s for my rear deck installed right now. However, it seems I can't get the speakers to give me both audio and the built in sub it has at the same time. With the current wires hooked up I only get vocals and not its bass.

Is there a way I can hook up these 5ways to my factory wiring (or through a sub and amp - I have a spare one if needed).

I have a 02 Z24 Cavalier.

Thank you all!

Is it possible the speakers have midwoofers that you can't hear over the ridiculous number of "tweeters"?

For reference:

they still should produce bass, despite of # of tweets

Questions for the OP...
Are you still using the OEM headunit?
Do you have the "Premium" sound sytem?
Were your OEM speakers connected with 4 wires?

yeah think the stock speaker wires have set of wires that send a high pass signal and a set of wires that send a full pass signal. i think your just wired up to the wrong set.

as for the 5 ways speakers. tahts really aboue 3 speakers to much. stick with 2-way speakers next time.

- I have an aftermarket Kenwood DNX-7100 installed.
- No Premium sound on my car.
- Yes, the OEMs where hooked up with 4 wires.

Thank you all for your help so far!

Are you saying I'm wired up to the wrong set of wires? or Wrong + -?

Because, I've tried the other wat with the 4 wires (its a set of tweet +, tweet -, subwoof +, subwoof -) and no matter what I do I cant get the tweeter and subwoofer in each speaker to work together at the same time.

I know, I went a little overboard, but they where onsale when I got them and they had great reviews.

Thank you for your help so far!

Are you using the factory speaker wiring or did you run new wires from your new head-unit?

factory wires to the kenwood 6x9s

Okay. If your factory speakers had 4 wires then you have the "Premium" system.
There's a small amp mounted near your left (driver's side) rear strut tower.
That amp has a built in cross-over.
You're going to need to use the wires going into the amp instead of the wires coming out.
Do you know what I mean?

I didn't know that since I had the 4 wires I had premium sound Thank you for making that know to me.

Yes, I understand what you are say - I'll go and give this a shot on the car and post back with the results! Thank you very much Binzer!

You're welcome.

Small typo correction...
Left speaker -
Positive(+) *Brown*
Negative(-) Yellow

Right speaker -
Positive(+) Dark Blue
Negative(-) Light Blue

These are the wires coming from the head-unit going into the amp.
Since your Kenwood is already hooked to them, if you clip them at the amp and wire them to your speakers, it should work.

id likely just run a new set of speaker wires from your headunit to the speakers and avoid the stock mess.

as for the speakers look at it this way.

if a 6x9 costs 100 dollars would you rather have one with 2 $50 speakers, or one with 5 $20 speakers? anything over 2 on a co-axial style speaker is relaly geared more to the whole more speakers must be better advertising.

Id run my own wires too. 12 gauge speaker wire is cheap and meatier than the bitch ass stock wires.

I'm working on the car now and see that there is only 1 plug with wires coming in to the Amp in the rear quarter area. So I need some more help if some can, thanks!

So the wires come from the radio straight to the amp, but in the middle of the quarter panel behind that B***h side interior panel there is a split in the wires that makes a upside down T (straight line goes from radio to amp, and second line of same wires goes up to the top deck to the speakers). So would these mean I have to tap in before the split in the wires coming from the radio right?

Right.
You want to use the brown, yellow, dark blue, and light blue wires that are coming from the front of the car to the amp.
Not the ones going to the speakers.

Problem Solved

I did what Binzer did and here is a write up of what I did and found in my GM Service Manuals

Audio Amp (UQ3); Theres also another Audio Amp U85.

Amp Wire Pin (UQ3)
LF Rear + Brown A3
LF Rear - Yellow B3

RH Rear + Dk Blue A4
RH Rear - LT Blue B4

I cut each wire at about 7 inches from the harness and soldered new speaker wires to each wire leading away from the harness.

I want to thank you all very much for your help!

The sounds amazing before the sub was working within them, but now I love the sub hit they produce. - The entire Kenwood system sounds amazing now! Thank you for your help Binzer!
