Kenwood Excelon Head Unit Question
Saturday, March 03, 2012 11:33 AM
I just added a 200w amp to my internal rear speakers (some Memphis 6x9s with the included crossovers *MC692) and a small amp and sub to my system... Now before the amps I was able to crank the volume to near max with the rear cutoff frequency set at 80hz and get smooth and clean bass. I even put it as low as 60hz with lower volume and I had people ask me what kind of sub I had in the trunk... when there was none. NOW, I've installed this stuff thinking I'd get cleaner signals at high volume since the amp in the head unit isn't driving all four of the speakers alone anymore but instead, it seems to have cut all the lower end signals to my internal speakers once I hooked up the sub. Is this normal and is there any way I can deliver those 80hz sounds to my rear speakers again or am I doomed to make this cheap sub & amp attempt to handle all the low end sound?

By the way, if this is confusing, sorry. I typed it off of the top of my head. I'll be happy to answer any questions to help this along.

ALSO, it's been a looooooong time since I posted on this site. I lost all hope for my Sunfire until recently.

Have you checked your LPF setting on the amplifier? If you're crossing the signal at the headunit switch your amp to full range for your rear deck speakers and door speakers. Also do you have two amps, one for sub one for speakers, or just one?

I've got 2 amps.

Both 2 channel. Both cheap.

One is a BOSS AUDIO R1002. 200w. I put this one on the rear speakers since it was smaller and not bridgeable like my other 2 channel. The other one is an MTX Thunder 240. Since this one was bridgeable, I bridged it to my Urban Audio 12" 250w sub (which actually doesn't sound as bad as I thought it would but doesn't compare to my 2 12s on 1000w (*moment of silence*), ).

I'm thinking, that since there's RCAs plugged into the "Sub" outputs on the HU, the system automatically cutoff the rest of the speakers past a certain frequency (sounds like somewhere between 80-120). The only way to check to see if that's the issue is to remove the sub wires from the radio and see if the bass is back in the 6x9s. If that doesn't work... then I'll switch the amps. If THAT doesn't work, I've got no idea where to go.

Maybe I should skip the built in crossovers and wire the speakers straight to the amp?

Try swapping the + and - of the speaker wire going to the subs (or if your deck allows it, turn "reverse" or "180" on for the sub). Your sub(s) is/are probably causing destructive interference with the 6x9s.

And I've never seen a deck (I've seen a lot of em) that "automatically" screws with your crossover settings for any reason.

Okay. After some experimentation, I discovered it was the amp. It seems to be factory tuned for mids/highs. Or just too weak to put out the lows. lol. After putting the rear deck speakers onto another amp (the one I had hooked up to my sub prior to it blowing due to my wife's... over enthusiasm) they sounded full and deep again. Problem solved. Now I just need another sub/amp to put in the trunk. It sounds so empty...
