Aftermarket radio..which wires to which?
Wednesday, February 20, 2013 6:13 AM
This is probably a stupid question, but I just want to make sure first.
Ive had an aftermarket Pioneer headunit in my car since about a year, and back then I couldnt find the plug for the factory harness for my life so I ended up splicing every wire and all, which became a cluster f**k. reently ive had connections issues to 2 of the speakers off and on,

So now I found the plug for the harness, now my question is....

Directions with the harness said which wire goes to what.... and im guessing I connect those to the same wire according to the Haynes manual im using whether they're different colors right?

01 z24.

IIRC..

Memory (+12v Constant) Orange
Ground (-) Black

Right Front (+) Light Green
Right Front (-) Dark Green
Left Front (+) Tan
Left Front (-) Gray
Right Rear (+) Dark Blue
Right Rear (-) Light Blue
Left Rear (+) Brown
Left Rear (-) Yellow

For your +12v Switched I THINK you'll need to run your own wire from the fuse box. That's what I did wayyyy back in the day on my 01 base model but I haven't messed with radios in a long time and I didn't know about JBO back then to check and see if that was the only way. In any case, it worked for me for years until I finally unloaded the car. Someone else chime in if anything is incorrect.

Thanks! Im confused, but i think im overwhelming myself.

How many wires do I need to splice/connect for each speaker. For example.....

IF im doing the right front speaker, I need to take both the light & dark green wire from the new plug that connected to factory harness, to both or just 1 of the wires that go to the new aftermarket radio.whichever the manual says..
Please help

No more common ground systems anymore, each speaker has 2 wires (at the head unit). The aftermarket head unit you have will have a plug with universal aftermarket wire colors. You'll be able to find that list anywhere on Google. I know the grays and whites are for the front speakers, the greens and purples are for the rears, red to key on +12, yellow to constant +12, and black to ground.

So in total: 11 wires need hooked up to 11 other wires.

Thanks! So my last questio is....

Do I take both the blue/white/green wires that come off the new harness to the (one) appropiate colored wire to the headunit or which? Thats where im confused.

Example: Right front speaker---- I take 1 or both purple wires from new harnes that connects to factory one to whichever color is appropiate to the single wire that connects to the headunit???

Thanks everyone!

Quick question. I have been hooking the illumination up to the thin grey wire when i do them in 00+ GMs is this not correct or not needed? I see no mention of this up top. Just was how i was shown years ago

I've never hooked the illumination wire up to anything in any car. No problems with any of them. It's definitely not necessary.
