Bwahahaha!! I just had the funniest argument with the head salesman on our floor about this. He sent an owner of a 2000 cavy away because we were out of the $120 harness. I told him they didn't need it and he went on to argue with me about it ans how it F@CKs things up. Normally this would surprise me but he has a history of doing crap wrong and selling people the wrong parts. He said "call GM and Metra both and see what they say." I told him that's just because of a)the issue with the other GM cars and the airbags(not cavy's) and 2) both companies want more money for themselves.

I apologize to other j-body owners for the idiocy you have to endure.

Thought I'd comment on this thread. In my search for the cheapest and easiest route possible to upgrade the radio I was at a local Meijer store and found they acctually sell the harness with the door chime module there! its only $50 too, much cheaper than the absured price $120 best buy or circuit city sell for it.

i work at ccity n its only 100, price match to mobile one for 75 , you can use the 99-2003, BUT you will lose door/onstar and when someone plugs a vcm into ur car when ur throwing codes, it wont work

Uhh.. no. Mine works fine.

EDIT: The radio does not store codes. The PCM stores powertrain codes.

And the BCM stores SRS/airbag system codes.

dont know if his has been said didnt feel like reading 11 pages just to see if anyone did or not

i changed my radio bought a harness for it (only $20) had the box with it so you will still have the door chime it plugs straight in to the factory harness and wires straight to the radio no problems

and one tip if you can you want to solder the wires my friend had his done at bestbuy and they taped the wires together ( it was duct tape also) and he had nothing but problems

after getting the run around and all of the bull from almost every place I went to, I asked for the geo tracker harness and it looks like it is the right one,
It is BHA2003, best kits and harnesses, under $20 from futureshop, I think Best buy should have it as well,
Could have ordered the scoshe gm05 from walmart .(even the book you used to look up which one you needed said to use the gm05 harness)
so I think the BHA2003, the gm05 and the metra 70-2003 should all work,

and thanks for people who suggested asking for a tracker harness, I had no questions asked at all, very nice to not get the bs.

I am sure that the techs as many install shops do know what they are doing, I think it is the sales people that usually do not have a clue, asked for the one for my car at futureshop(2001 cav) and they gave me the one for the 99's I think. had no clue about what would work, bestbuy did go and try to find the tracker harness even though they knew what I drove, so that was good. one salesman at futureshop told me they just cut the harness and attach the wires, another told me that they had to use the $150 harness, you can really tell who knows their stuff and who does not. but what would you hack up the harness if they don't have to?

Quick question. I think I'm just going to run off the wiper fuse with a tap. But if I were to tap the 12v switched wire under the dash do I run a fuse with the holder on the 12v switched wire or the red switched power wire going to the head unit? I would think the head unit. And I'm assuming a 25 amp fuse would suffice?

25 amps? Damn... a little overkill It's just for switched power. It's not supplying actual power to the deck...

1 amp should be more than sufficient!!

I don't know what the hell they are telling these kids at Future Shop and Best Buy (same company) but it must be to make more of a commission. I went to the other audio shops in town and they all told me what to expect. Just for kicks I emailed General Motors and they sent me the same information that I got from this web site.

Thank-you

Hello

i was wondering if you can give me a hand. i'm installing a stereo in a 2002 cav, i have a harness i paid $20 for. i have unswiched power ,but i can't find the switched power. the red wire on the harness that i purchased doesn't seem to go to anywhere on the car side connector. the person that sold me the harness said that the red wire goes to the fuse....do you have any idea what this means?
please help

I got THIS at Meijers for 50 bucks and it works perfect. Just connect the wires and good to go.

This is a great example of why no one reads or researches anything, including stickies. 11 pages of "what if I crap on my headunit, will I lose my left side headlight?" -page 2. Wouldn't it be a better idea for a moderator to delete the irrelevant posts and lock these stickies up so people can use them to research the answers they need, as they were intended?

OK forgive me if I missed this somewhere or I didn't search good enough.

I just bought a 2003 Cavalier LS sport coupe with the supposed "Premium stereo"
If this was the Bose or monsoon it would Say "Bose" or "Monsoon" on the face correct?
If it Helps the car came with XM radio in it.
want to put my pioneer from my old '95 Cavy into it and I plan on buying the module to keep my warning chimes and goodies.

Will the Scoshe GM09SR / GM09SRB work to keep my keep my chimes with a non-Bose stereo.
The description leads me to believe that I will not have to run a 12V+ switched source with this setup.
Will this also keep the radio on until I open the door like the factory one does.

also is there an adapter that I can use to adapt my factory XM antenna to a sirius plug so that I can use my Sirius radio when I put my new deck in.

I can post pictures if need be.

If this is a repost, sorry and flame on!

I did this installation last night! - worked out great,, thanks for the guide.. I really wish i could go back to that stereo shop and show that installer who swore up and down i needed a 150$ harness..

Here is the overall cost of everything

10$ - Harness @ canadian tire
10$ - Antenna adapter @ canadian tire

The fuse taps they had at cdn tire were 15.99 they're called a 'Create a Circuit' there - I didn't buy one - will go to an auto parts store and look for one. for now I just soldered a fused wire to one side of the windshield wiper mini fuse, I'll do it up properly when i find aplace that sells proper fuse taps for less than 15$

Wow, am I ever glad I found these forums. All I have to say is "Thank you!" for saving me some bank, I'll be giving some back with a shirt purchase for sure.

I do have a couple questions though (and yes, I read all 11 pages). Most of the guides aren't working any more (aside from John's, as far as I can tell), and I was wondering if there is a detailed guide available with photos for a newb like me to follow along. I am brand new to wrenching, the forums, and just got my '04 fire in March. My forum name says it all. If there are no photo guides I'd be happy to photograph my adventures as per the steps in John's guide and provide him the pictures for attachment to help other clueless individuals such as myself. The guide is great, but I'm a tactile learner first, visual learner second unfortunately

Take care and thanks again. I can see I'll be spending a lot of time on these boards.

Talk about frustrating though. Every installation place that I go to is giving me the same BS speech. One guy at Future Shop actually told me that doing this was illegal and would not only disable the airbags but void any insurance coverage I would get. Why is this misinformation so incredibly prominent?

I think the title of this thread should be changed to:

"WHY IS THE HARNESS FOR MY CAR $110?!?!?!?!?!"

I think it would attract more attention and less people will make new threads maybe???!?!?!? Maybe?!?!?!

Ok,

I didn't get a chance to read through EVERY post on this thread....

but, I'm trying to switch back to a factory headunit. (I know i'm crazy).

I bought my car with an aftermarket CD player, and wanted the factory look, so I bought a stock CD player off ebay.

When you plug it in, it works fine, but when you turn the key on it says "CAL" and then "LOC" and quits working.

Anyone know how to fix this? or should do I have to take it to the dealership or something?
