hey john, to disable airbags cant you just pull the fuse and disconnect the battery?
Well.. GM says disconnect battery.. pull fuse... disconnect CPA's and connectors...

So technically... that's the way to do it. (I personally don't want the airbags going off in my face, but that's just me).

That said... I don't disconnect them at all. I don't disconnect the battery either. I just pop off the dash, pull the bezel, then the radio, then install the new one. Takes me 30 minutes, tops.. (I do the harness pre-wiring before I get to the car).

hey john you need to get dave to make this a STICKY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

when i worked at the dealer all i did was pull the fuse , before i worked on them never disconected the battery

and i never had any problems , but its always safer to go buy the factory manual

but for doing the radio , i never mess with any of the air bag stuff

Just a quick thank you to John for the information on his site. I went to Best Buy to get the pieces that I needed to install my Pioneer Super Tuner in my 2002 Cavalier. As most of you can guess they tried to tell me that the car would be basically unfunctionable when I finished, unless of course I gave them lots of money and they did the install. I went to John's site and found the information that I needed. The install was really fast and simple. The only thing that I lost was the annoying chime, a plus in my opinion. Anyway thanks John.

the opening for the face of the radio is 1.5din. pioneer (and i'm not sure who else) makes decks specificly sized for the 1.5din opening that gm and chrysler uses. the double dins are usually on imports, toyota, kia (my gf's sephia has a double din opening), etc.

it still is *possible* that you can use the double din, you will have to do soem cutting and maybe a little fabricating to make it fit and look nice.
addendum:

the 1.5 din is the reason why they will sell you a faceplate adapter kit to mount the standard din size radio in the larger opening. on the plus side, the 1.5din is sized right to fit a standard deck and a thin style eq. i had that setup in my 88.
^ no that's not 100% true.

95-99 dashes had a 1.5 din radio, and yes, an aftermarket 1.5 radio did fit in there.

in 00+ they swapped around the positions of the radio and hvac, and also GM moved to a double din sized radio, but the hole in the dash WILL NOT FIT an aftermarket double din. if you want one to fit, do something custom and start cutting. also, 1.5 wont fit because its not big enough.
One thing you might want to know for all do it yourselfers, there is no swithed power source behind the radio in 00' and up cavys and sunfires. You will have to run an acc. wire from another source. Also, the whole "motorola thing" is just a name for that certian type af antena plug, its the most common style used in cars.

actually youre only half correct jason, any j body 03 and up you have to run a wire to the column/fuse box. you can still get a 12 volt accessory wire in the hvac controls in the 00-02. look for 2 thin gauge brown wires coming out of the same plug on the right hand side, you can tap into either one of these.

I have a ? about the 2001 cavalier i just installed a stereo in. Why dont he blinkers or brake lights work?? I followed ur directions step by step, except i didnt completely disengage the air bags, i only disconnected the negative on bat, and removed the fuse for airbags. Then i used a MINI ADD-A-CIRCUIT, and used it in the wipers fuse. I used the metra harness u described, 7-2003. I checked like 5 fuses, the blinker, the brake/hazard,ect... and all seem to be fine. HELP ME PLZ!!!! I need to fix this ASAP so they dont have to go get it checked out. Thx for any help you can give me.

TO see a pic of a double din radio in a Cavy go back to page 1 of this thread and look for AMERICONIUM's post.

I like to go to stereo install places and ask them questions for fun. TO see how dumb they are and how much crap they try to pass off to unknowing people. SO me and a buddy go into Tweeter and ask them about a radio hook up in my car.
He goes on threw all the BS about my car not working and stuff. Tells me about keeping factory radeo. SO i ask were he plans on sticking my factory radio. The guy tells me he will just hide in IN THE DASH behind the new one.

I laughed at him and said theres no room. He said hes done it and that there is PLENTY of room inside the dash. I just got a big kick out of this guy. My buddy I was with has his own stereo install biss and he was busting this dude on all sorts of BS. it was so funny.

Thank you Mr. John Lenko. You saved me at least $150 Cdn. I used the harness and mounting bracket you suggested and spliced into the wiper fuse and my new deck started up without any issues.
However, my new deck was about an inch deeper than stock and thus I needed to dremil out 2 plastic posts behind the radio opening to allow the deck to sit deeper and flush. Did anyone else have to do this?

I can't believe I had 2 shops quote my between $150 -$200 Cdn because they said they could not install without deck relocation or a Class 2 spliced in speaker. What a joke!!

Thanks again John Lenko!!
I went to Tweeter to buy a wiring harness and a dash kit for my 2004 Cavalier and they told me first off I had to get a T-harness for $100, which they didn't have in stock, and that I'd have to leave my factory deck in or I'd mess up my car electronically due to wiring. Is there any other retail stores (Circuit City, Best Buy, etc) that will not screw me over and KNOW what they're talking about??
