The BIG 3 or just 2
Sunday, February 06, 2005 4:40 PM
I was at a car audio shop here in calgary and while talking about the big three to the guy a pale epression came over his face. so i explain and he said just to do the wiring from the battery to alt and from battery to frame. that i don't need the battery to engine ground. So is it just the two that i should do or are all three fine. Also say i can get my hands on some 0 gauge is that good for the big three or should i just stick to the 4 gauge. Thanks in advance. Also weres a good audio shop in cow town.

that's not even the "3rd" of the three....you forgot about the alternator to ground. the battery to frame/engine block is the same thing BATTERY GROUND.

BIG THREE CONSISTS OF...
*BATTERY GROUND
*BATTERY TO ALTERNATOR (POSITIVE WIRE)
*ALTERNATOR TO GROUND(CHASSIS OR ENGINE BLOCK)

4 gauge should be fine. and since you should be leaving the stock wires on too it'll be more then enough. best way i found for alternator to ground was like this

You do realize that leaving the stock wires on does absolutely nothing?

well, technically....it'll be like a 3.1 gauge or something, if you leave the stock as well. There is more total wire area, so there would be theoretically better transfer. It'd be like building a 4 lane highway next to a secondary road, but leaving it open too. You'd have a lot of cars taking the 4 lane, but there would still be some that took the smaller road. Total cars would be more, since both roads still work....

I agree that if you leave the stock wiring, you probably wouldn't notice the difference, but if you wanted to get realllly specific....

current will travel the path with the least resistance. so the current will flor the 4 awg, not the smaller wires. leaving the stock wires won't hurt or help. i left mine because if i ever get rid of the car i won't have to mess with it.

well the more current that goes over that 4 gauge with the least resistance. the closer it gets to its max capabilities, causing it to heat up. as it heats up its resistance goes up also causing the secondary stock wire to act like an overflow valve. (think filling a bucket with a fire hose and having a water hose and a straw to empty it, of course the straw isn't going to really make a big difference at lower flow rates but at higher it takes ~some~ of the strain off the water hose.)

to the bolt that has the stock positive wire hooked to it.

the blue wire is a ground...the positve connection is behind that unbolted black bracket.

Whoa, go out for supper and i come back to this. So i need one from positive to alt. Alt to ground and neg battery to ground? @!#$ i'll just look at my car.

Some people jsut don't understand anything...

Just because you leave your stock wires there doesn't mean that they will not do anything. All the wires will carry some current. Yes, electricity travels the path of least resistance but that doesn't mean that nothing will travel on the stock wire. The only way nothing at all will travel on the stock wire is if there is no resistance on the one wire. There will always be some resistance so you will get some current flow on the other wire.....

How is the hookup on the alt's POS side? Is it like the NEG with a bolt, outside the case? Fuse the alt-to-batt wire correct? What amperage though?

is there a physical (not electrical) diffrence between ground wire and power wire? i mean is there diffrenet strands in power and ground? also whats the best way to cut 0 gauge wire?

i thought the big 3 was battery to alternator, battery to ground and ground to motor.

also how would it help running a ground from the alt. (bolt) to the motor since the alternator is hooked to the motor?

you alternator is grounded through the engine block, to the chassis. so you could either add a ground from the block to the chassis, or straight from the alternotar to the chassis.

ok thnx alot wysiyg....but i still have more questions. how exactly do you wire this up like that? the reason that im not understanding how this mod is done is because i justtried it no too long ago and it seemed to have done worse with it. so i changed it back to factory wiring. also, why would you need and extra ground from battery to chassis when the battery allready has that? please explain further.....thanks

the reason is because it's much much BIGGER. all the wires have stock wires already there. but they are puny and restrictive when you have several thousand watts of power in the trunk. the large wires allow the circuit to flow much more current.

umm...the feeling is NOT mutual!!! lmao...

but that's what i made that page for, to help out. If you got any questions by saturday, then ask. I'll tell ya right now, getting the positive wire on the alt. can be a PAIN. but here's a tip, un-do the bolt from above, then crawl underneath and reach up to attach your wire to the stud.

I like mine, there is one 0 guage ground to the Tranny, and the other to the stock grounding location.

Funny, I use Blue for + and silver for - , and Wysiwyg is just the EXACT opposite.

ground to the tranny??

and yea, i use the opposite, dunno why, i guess i've always been a "dark is ground, light is hot" kinda guy, lol.
