Ok I am pretty new to audio but am learning alot, did the whole search thing and didn't really find to much, did find one thing. But anyways, my question is this:
I am gettin the Alpine MRD-1001 mono amp 550w x 1 @ 4 ohms, 1000w x 1 @2 0hms. Now I understand that if the amp puts out lets say the 2 ohms operation and its powering lets say the Audiobahn ALUM12Q's (2) which are 3 ohm and 12 ohm operational if I hooked the subs up in parallel to get the 3 ohm operation, how much RMS would I be powering each sub (or per coilover) given that Alpine amp? I do understand that if the ohms of the subs (how they are wired in parallel or series) are different then waht the amp is capable of you lose RMS? thanks in advance.....again im new to audio and trying to understand

Houston we have a problem. My suggestion would be to get rid of those Audiobahns and get 2 subs with dual 2 ohm coils. You can run them series/parallel to give you a 2 ohm load. With the subs you have now, you can either run a 1.5 ohm load, a 6 ohm load, or a *gasp* 24 ohm load. Another option you have is get a high current amp that's stable to 1 ohm mono.
ok, i haven't gotten any of this yet, I wanted to use it as an example, and hopefully I'd be set in the correct path. I am basically set on this amp, cause I am running an Alpine system in my car. I guess my next question would be which subs (opinions) can I run at 1,000 RMS with a 2 ohm load with this amp to get the most out of it? hopefully I made sense :-)

I would recommend getting straight up 4 ohm subs for a monoblock. Dual Voice Coil Subs would either drop the ohm load too much (if wired for a 2 ohm load), or not be enough (wired into 8 ohms). You can wire 2 four ohm subs into a 2 ohm load and bam, you got 1000 Watts of power baby!

If you only want to run two subs, then do like what he said and get your self two 4 ohm spreakers that can handle 500 watts rms each.

get two dual 2ohm subs....wire them in series/parallel.
If you want to run some 3 ohm subs, you need to get 3 of them. otherwise you will have a screwed up load
and they are voice coils, not coilovers...lmao

If you already have the alum Q's you might be alright parallel wiring them for 1.5 ohms, seeing as how box rise may take it up a bit... everyone is different in that aspect though. If you dont have these subs, dont get them though, I'd do as suggested to get the 2 ohm load - most out of your amp. Two dual 2 ohm subs like audioque hd's, re sx's, ma X2's wired series parallel would get you 2 ohms mono - perfect for the amp.

You should be more than fine running at a nominal 1.5 ohms on that amp. Just make sure you set your gains properly.
