Decibel Levels.
Saturday, March 05, 2005 1:16 PM
Hey i borrowed a decibel meter from a friend and i used it in my car.
I have a 180watt deck and a 200watt V-power amp (150watts RMS).

Its 4 rockford speakers, and a clarion 10" sub in a sealed box. I placed the meter close to the windsheild and in the middle of the car (my car is a hatchback) and i hit 121.5 Db
both times.

I really have nothing to compare to, (i know nothing about stereo's, lol). is this pretty decent? lol it sure as hell pounds IMO for what i've got.

its basic for daily driver.
i think im hitting like 120 db too. some people consider 145+ to be daily driver level. its all up to what you are used to.

There was a sound competition at the local sound shop last summer I got there when it was over but they let me test my system anyway, I hit 135db's. Sometimes I wish it was louder but for the sake of my hearing I think it's just fine if anything it's already too loud.

Sounds like my number is pretty good for 1-10" sub. You guys both have 2 - 12's.

Any place that sells musical instruments should have them.

Who knows how many db's your hitting. I'm going over to my friends place and he has a MA 18" and a 3000 watt amp. I can tell you IMO my bass is alot more accurate tho.

The way I figure it, unless you're planning on competing, than it's all about how it sounds to you. In my old car, I had a single 12 setup hitting about 130, and it felt loud as heck in the car. And nowadays, I even think that sometimes, numbers lie. I've had friends who swear they'd outhit my car, and it may show it on the meter, but I can tell you that overall, I'm louder, AND cleaner. But it's all about the sound you get, and the sound that you are looking for.

(PS: pardon my crappy new sig lol.)

i had 4 15's i was running off of 1 500d and hit a 156 in comp that was when i was just about bass. 156 makes your ears ring and eyes shake. I am more about clarity now. i would say a good db is about 130 if you have some nice highs.
actually most music places dont even have the meters. they are mainly install. there are about 3-4 different kinds of meters out there. and 2 of them are hella expensive.

135db @ 35 hz is gonna sound a lot louder to you then 137db @60hz.... it'll meter higher probably, but it won't "sound" as loud.

Hmm yeah i cant imagine my stereo getting much louder, i dont think i'd enjoy it anymore. i have a great balance with highs, and the bass is unreal. I get alot of comments.

2x 12" volfenhag dvc series subs + 1x 1200watt volfenhag amp in a ported enclosure. happy with the sound for the price.

also wanted to mention that i own the decibel meter. anyone in northeastern ct area wanting to get tested let me know. i need another amp the subs are capable of twice the power handling that they are getting

Defines a basshead.

I believe I have handled up to around 160 db without a problem. I love bass, I love the feeling when you can't breathe because the wind is getting nocked out of you. I just haven't had a chance to build or buy anything in the past two years.

Here is a nice video of me getting my @ss kicked by steelcitysounds. - around 152 db at 32hz

how loud someone is is all relative. just remember that when your in the 130 db range after about a half hour of listening your starting to permanently damage your hearing. at the 40 range you have about 10 minutes before you do damage. 150 range your pretty much instantly damaging your hearing. and really unless yoru competing numbers are nothing more then an ego thing.

If it's full range from the drivers seat then 120 db is pretty loud. If it's running tones with the meter on the dash then it's weak sauce.
