M45 Kit Idler pulley

The pulley itself is worn around the bearing and I cannot find a replacement bearing 0.5-1mm larger then stock to make it fit. Anyone know of a replacement? I've been to multiple auto stores and none seem to have one small enough. I searched and came up empty.

I used to have the number.

Its on there somewhere.

There is a bearing that is as wide as the belt, and as tall as the stock pulley.

That's what I used both times.

I also thing a idler pulley off of a 91-95 4.3 vin W vortec would work.

I think I still have the number Chris. I will look the next time I get a chance. I just remember it was a Timkin bearing

Idler pulley: 88960493
Idler pulley bearing: 88960581
Idler bracket asembly: 12498289

I could not find the first two at the dealers nor internet, maybe a GM parts guy here may have better luck. I had to finally buy the whole bracket for $150 w/tax.

I am a parts guy. No pulley anywhere in the country as far as dealer listings go. I ordered in two styles of the vortec idlers and both were too big to fly. So for now I've used used spme foil tape between the bearing and pulley to quite the thing down.

I searched past posts and I did see mention of a big bearing used to replace the unit but no reference to a part number or brand. That would be very helpful if anyone has the ability to research it again..

.............

Did ya look on OECNNECTION, Tracks?

Its been discontinued for some time.....

I would advise all to use the bearing though. Less to go wrong.

Are you guys just seeing wear or are you hearing noise? One of my bearings in that area is making noise, and I'm currently not sure if its the s/c snout or the idler.

I was getting like a grinding noise. took the pulley off and the bearing had started to spin in the pulley. i just made some small spot welds on it and it seems to be holdin up.... but for how long. I have been looking for a bearing and I can't find one anywhere. I talked to a guy who makes bearings and he is gonna see what he can do.

Well I'll be damned.

I've had some terrible bearing noise for many many months now. I left it alone since I have a second car now that I drive almost daily. I thought my M45 snout bearing was going bad, but after taking the belt off today and messing with the pulleys, my idler pulley is the one that's loose and can spin and rock on the bearing. I tried taking the pulley off, but I think the bearing inner race is rusted to the bracket. I tried some PB but no luck, so I left it on there for now. After putting the bolt back in, it looks like the PB has acted as a lubricant somewhat and has quieted down the loose idler pulley for now.

So I guess I shall be researching this as well. I'll be listening on this thread as well and I'll post something if I find anything worthwhile. The funny thing is, I just replaced an idler pulley on my other car yesterday.

Viper,
That's very similar to what happened to me, and I suggested to look for this when I had the issue. You can also conclude if the noise is there if you place a long metal bar and with your hand and cup it, place the bar at the top of areas where you think it may sound and hear for yourself. I had a similar noise from your other thread.
After I did such a thing, I sprayed WD-40 and it was gone, I immediately replaced mine in 1 hr.

I wonder if the bearing is rusting or seizing, and the pulley is forced to continue rotating and finally ends up breaking free from the outer race.

What I saw was two things; the pulley was slightly loose and most of the bearing greese was on the lip of the pulley near the bolt.

Thanks. I stored the number in my BlackBerry so I'll post it for you from now on! Now I just need to find a place that can order it for me.

For the time being I found a usable replacement at Autozone. The manager was nice enough to let me in the back and browse the shelves till I found the smallest pulley they had. Duralast # 231135. It's a metal pulley that is a bit bigger then the stock and only as wide as the belt, but if you have pulley that's about to explode it's a lot better then that, haha.

I looked at the bearing under SKF's catalog, and it doesn't seem to be as wide as the belt, which I don't think would be a great idea.

As for Duralast number, how much bigger is "a bit" bigger? There isn't that much more room on the tensioner.
