Ordering Pistons from Venolia - please help!
Wednesday, January 05, 2005 8:09 PM
So I tried ordering pistons from Venolia today.

I had a previous job number of the pistons I wanted. They were for a 2.2L with a 0.020" overbore and stock compression.

Tom @ Venolia asked me if anything was to be altered on this particular job # or if I just want those made up. I said that instead of the stock compression I'd like to have the pistons dished, and told him it was for a Turbo application.

He then wanted to know a few things about the engine that I haven't been able to find.

CC's of the combustion chamber, and the head, and the gasket thickness, etc etc etc.

I was obviously ill-prepared and didn't have that information ready.

The reason I posted on here was to ask anyone if they had a Job # from Venolia for the LN2 2.2L GM engine which inlcuded the 0.020" overbore AND the 8:1 compression.

I did not post, however, to argue and discuss my reasons for lowering the compression.

If anyone can help me out, it would be much appreciated.

I emailed Mike and Cav.Conn. already (as that is where the Job # originated)

I was just hoping for a little help from

thanks again,

Steve
Mike got that job # from me. That job # is the original number for the pistons that I had made. The only thing altered is that the pistons are set up to use larger than stock wrist pins. If i were you, I would tell them to move the ring lands furthur down the piston since you are going turbo. When they made my pistons, I didnt request for the ring lands to be moved down.
Just so you know, that job # that you have was made off of a 9:1 compression piston from a 2200 {98-02). Your 96 2.2's cly head chambers are a different shape than the 2200's chambers. So if you use those pistons, the compression might not actually be 9:1 with your cly head. Your 96 2.2's piston also has a deeper dish than the 2200's piston. So there will be no telling what your compression would be if you use those 9:1s that were made for my 2200.

Steve, did you not get that job # from Tony? If so it will be for your engine and not the 98+, you should clarify this. Also, have you checked the NY J-bodies page, they have lots of specs on all the J engines, although I'm not sure if they have what you're looking for. Good luck, hit me up on MSN if you have any Q's.
adler, you have mail

and alex you have mail as well.

I was un aware that these are the incorrect pistons for my engine.

Its funny now that you mention it, because I know of someone who used these exact pistons in HIS turbo setup.

NY J-body website library does not specificy the combustion chamber CC's.

You can use those pistons in your 96 2.2, but I wouldnt be forsure if the compression would really be 9:1. If the 95-97 and the 98-02 2.2 heads have the same chamber cc's, I believe the compression ratio would actually be 9:1 with those Venolia pistons.

I think I know the guy who u are talking about who used those 127669 Venolias in his 95-97 2.2s.

I could not find the 2200 head ccs, headgasket thickness, deck height, piston to valve clearance, etc. when I was trying to have a set of lower compression pistons made for my 2200. The best way to do find those specs would probably be to send a assembled block and head to your machine shop so they could measure and find the specs for you. I could have sworn that someone posted the cly head cc's for either the 95-97 or the 2200s on this message board.

Buy those JE's that Alex is selling. He is letting them go for a badass price!!!!

^ Thats because nobody should replace pistons with stock size. The walls need to be cleaned up with new pistons. Karo won't even sell you stock sized pistons just for that reason.
