Downgrading My Turbo
Saturday, January 29, 2005 10:20 AM
While the motor is out being built, I've decided to get a new turbo.

I currently run a t3/t04e 60trim .63ar stage2wheel.

I'm only shooting for 250whp max so...
From what I've been seeing the 60trim is much overkill for my new setup:

Wiseco 8.9:1 .020 Pistons
Eagle Rods
Polished/Balanced Crank
CNC ported head

I'm def. set on going 50 trim, the turbine size is the tough decision.
I currently spool about 3500rpm, full boost a little later with the .63stage2. I love the punch it has, but I'd like it to hit a little sooner.

I'm thinking of going with the .48 for quick spool and stage3 for good flow. I've seen these specs are efficient up to 350whp. What do the turbo gurus think? I know some will say it will choke in the top end, but does everyone agree on that?

The Innovative Street Heat-50, Is what I planned on buying.

Suggestions? Thanks.

I say get a T3 Super 60. It is capable of making 300hp. There is no sense is buying a turbo any bigger than that.
What's wrong with the 60-1 trim?

Yes.
Now that i think of it i'll have a t3 Super 60 for sale pretty soon. It is a Turbonetics T3 Super 60 (.63/.48) set up for external wastegate, it has about 2000 miles on it. I just used it to break in my motor. It is on my car right now, i just need the snow to melt so i can pull off the cover and remove it.
Skilz what are you looking to get for that turbo??? I would definately be interested !!!

And McNulty if you are looking for an internal wastegate I have the perfect turbo for you !!! I have a Garrett T3 with an A/R of .42/.48 It spools up around 1800-2100 RPM's !! I need to go bigger since I have a 2.4 fully built motor !!! Works great, but is just too small for my plans !!! And I actually have 2 of them if you are interested !! One fully assembled on my car now, and one in pieces if you wanted to experiment !!
To all those who hate on domestics;
just remember that when I'm flying bye !!

i have the same .48 turbine .63 compressor side T3 super 60 as listed above. My car spools at about 1800 rpm's and the turbo is very very good for a 250hp application.
I have also heard some bad things about SSAUtochrome....from their headers cracking to the turbos falling apart!! There is a guy on Honda-Tech who bought a turbo from SSAUtochrome. The 2nd time he drove the car with the turbo, the compressor housing CRACKED in half. Now that is quality!!!!
Other guys are only getting a couple of miles out of those SSAutoChrome/Stone Mountain turbos before the seals and/or bearings take a crap.
Good luck with your turbo 97blkZ24, let us how long it lasts.

OMG, is that glue??!?!??!?!?!???

They must have dropped it and the compressor housing casting broke then glued it back together and sold it. That is @!#$in classic!
mines not an XSpower turbo, whatever that is, its a garret with serial numbers all over it. i am not quite sure how that even happens on a junk turbo... maybe hes a bull@!#$ter and dropped the damn thing? Only thing i could think of that would make a turbo do that.

i have also heard about the headers cracking, but for the price, i will keep repairing it or make a bracket to help support it. Sorry, not about to spend a grand on a turbo manifold for the CA heh.
