SAFC + Browntops = Perfect Idle
Monday, February 21, 2005 7:19 AM
Just to let everybody know, ESPECIALLY OrangeZ.... I installed brown tops with a cartech FMU 6 weeks ago, and to my dismay it idled like a truck....

At 30psi idle it wreaked of fuel, blew black smoke, and left soot all over the floor. I was assured this was normal for such large injectors. I didn't like it.

So I set out in finding a S-AFC, and yesterday I finally got it in the car. Within 3 minutes of turning the unit on I had leaned out my idle 25% and the car now idles like stock. I'm sure I can pull a bit more to clean it up a bit ... I also raised my base fuel pressure up to 36 lbs at idle just to make sure the injectors aren't too low.

To anybody that doubts the usefulness of this tool - rethink your options. I now have a tremendous amount of control over my injectors, and a nice little bevy of extra's to monitor now, since the map, TPS and 02 are hooked up to the unit.

If you're running a 95-99 LD9 and want about 250 whp, I recommend a fuel pump, brown tops, cartech AFMU and an S-AFC.... plenty of fuel for up top, the ability to add fuel with boost (in a vague way, I mean it's an FMU after all), lots of control for idling, and the ability to tune your fuel curve at low and high throttle....

Seems pretty perfect for a quasi-junkyard setup to me.

Thats cool.I gotta put my brown tops back in after i have them cleaned and balanced.Let me ask you a question. What are your map sensor and tps sensor reading at idle?My map jumps around between 0.900 - 1.100v.And my tps is at .545-.550v.What do you have your settings at, 05in and 05 out?

5 in 5 out... yes.

My map was reading between .1xxx volts and like 4.1xxxx volts.

The TPS I didn't check, but it reads my throttle perfectly when I tested it. It goes very smoothly from 0-100%

All in all this unit is fantastic...

Ahh, I didn't read that right. At idle eh. I honestly haven't checked that. Do you want me to check that for you in the next day or two when I head down to the car?

Np. You want the readings at idle eh... where do I go in the s-afc to view them in real time while idling? Sensor check?

Don't mean to hi-jack the thread...

--But--

Can you tell me where I can find some 35 lb injectors that will work on my 97 2.4??? I saw 2 auctions on ebay, but Im not real sure...

Are they the same injectors that are in the 87-88 turbo coupes???

RedDevil.. one of those auctions is mine. The injectors will work perfectly in your 97 2.4.

They seem alright, but I'd rather have brand new injectors...

Now I know this is a newbie quastion and please do not flame me. But why are you running both an afmu and the safc?? I to have a 255lph pump and brown tops but I am still stumped on wiether or not to get the safc, I know the safc is a great tuning tool but i don't know a hole lot about how to tune it and I think that is the only reason I haven't boughtn one yet. I will go search more on it now but any suggestions will be helpful.

First off, Ptrblkz24 - I didn't get down to the car last night (I was playing soccer)... I'll get down there tonight and let you know.

Red Devil - why do you need new injectors? Just get a set of brown tops and if you're a little hesitant about them, get them flow tested and cleaned. No big deal bud!

97blkZ24 - I have my settings for 5 in and 5 out... as for the rest it's all setup as... cylinder 4 and arrow up and to the right, set it for a 1 bar map, 7000 rpm limit and CR: is + - 30%

Then I just tanked back the 1000 rpm low-throttle position to -25% and then the 1500 to -15%.... I'm sure I can go lower but I'd rather not for now.

Even at cold start it idles like stock now. Before the S-AFC it was BRUTAL.

Firebug - the reason for both is that the S-AFC won't raise fuel needs with boost... the reason I'm using both is so that the FMU will raise fuel pressure with boost pressure, thereby giving me the fuel I want... I can then sit down and look at the A/F curve when it's close to what I want and fine tune it at high and low throttle if I have any dips or spikes in the fuel curve, and effectively flatten it out as much as I can.

Most FMU's have a problem of going temporarily lean as you go into boost - now I have the ability to add some fuel with the S-AFC just before boost hits and before the FMU kicks in so that the lean condition before boost no longer exists.

Definitely a low-end combo, considering what an FMU is... but it WILL be effective.

Jake - yes cookie has instructions - FOR A 2.3... so it makes life a biiiit harder. But not much ... also GlowinCav has a check engine light because he's using 42 lb injectors and pulling -50% at idle... the max of the S-AFC. he's getting a MAP Low Volt code.... probably because he's pulling so much voltage/fuel at idle. Makes sense.

Lastly.... Will... I'm going off the top of my head here so forgive me:

Red - Power.... go to the ABS relay in the fuse box.
Green - Tach... go to the tach plug in fuse box.
Blue - 02 sensor ... tie into purple 02 sensor wire
Grey - TPS... tie into blue wire at TPS
Yellow - Tie into CUT yellow wire at MAP going to engine (
White - Tie into CUT yellow wire at MAP going to MAP sensor.
Black - Ground to ECU ... Black/White wire in the blue connector in pin 18
Brown - Ground to ECU... Black/White wire in the blue connector in pin 18 (closer to ecu)

Forgive me if I mixed any of that up.

If anybody else needs any help, or has any more questions, please let me know.... I am posting this up to help people as there wasn't enough support on the forums for installing and running this unit - I had to go to other sources for help.

Thanks,

-Chris-

fuel pressure regulator > FMU. always.

??? What do you mean by that KC?

I have both an AFPR and a AFMU. FPR doesn't raise fuel pressure with boost... and I'm not gonna set my base pressure to like 70psi....
