GM S/C install ?
Sunday, February 27, 2005 11:50 AM
frist off i want to start off saying that i am a mechanic and i work on cars all day long, so i do know my way around a car.

I will be putting in on this wed. after hours in my shop and would like to know if the very detailed instruction manual that came with the kit left out a small detail that some of you ran into? I would like to have no suprises when doing this.

Second there is a GM dealership next door to the Honda dealership I work at. I just wanted to know how any of you got your car to get the reflash. I cannot push it b/c of a big hill. Would it be ok to drive it about a 1/4 mile as long as I do not take it above 1500 rpms? I just do not want it to run lean.

you will have to not install the 2bar map if you want to drive the car other wise it wont start right, but yes you can drive the car just try to keep it out of boost

Yea they dont really tell u to remove the bottom studs from where the intake manifold sits.. You'll see what I mean when u get the old manifold off. Also u will prolly need to ziptie the coolant and/or a/c lines away from the belt. Most of us have had to do that I believe.

Car is for Sale!Supercharger kit is for sale!

OrangeZ, myself as well as I think 2-3 other people have already proven that you can run the car WITH 2 bar map sensor installed. I actually think you commented on a thread in which I had already explained this to another installer.

Also zip tie the bypass valve open. This will prevent your engine from seeing boost. If you hit boost with the stock program, you'll risk detonation.

Like Bobby said, permanently tie your coolant lines out of the way of the belt. I sawed right through mine on the way to the dealership for the reflash.

Im also puting my GM s/c on this week and i am wondering if it would be fine to drive about 15-20km's (about 9-12miles) with out tieing up the by pass valve just keeping it under 2200rpm....

Tie it up. I don't see why you guys aren't wanting to do this right.

If you don't tie it up, one single blip of the throttle (on purpose or accident) will induce boost. RPMs are not what induce boost on the supercharger, throttle position is. At crusing throttle, my engine sees no boost at all regardless of what rpm I'm in.

Just do it right. Tie it up. It takes 2 seconds when it's off of the car and it takes a half second to cut it once you get to the dealership. If you're worried about using a zip tie, use a decent thickness string (which is what I used).

Throttle position does NOT directly induce boost. The S/C has no way of knowing what position your TPS is showing. You see no boost at cruise because there is vacuum present. Open it up and vacuum disappears. The valve closes and you start creating boost.

I drove a full weekend withOUT a ziptie and on the 1-bar MAP, I had no problems.

Yes it does. You even say so in your post

I never said that was true. No need to contest this. I never said anything regarding a sensor.

That's exactly what I was trying to say. I didn't say TPS like you're assuming.

Let me add Mr. Critical, "PHYSICAL throttle position" induces boost. Happy?

Your car will drive fine regardless if your bypass valve is tied open or not. That's not the point behind doing this. The point is to physically do away with the ability to add boost to your engine WITHOUT PROPER FUELING. Granted, Bobby's situation involves only driving a 1/4 mile. He should be fine. However, if he pulls out into heavy traffic and needs to jump on it quickly, without having the bypass tied open, he will immediately hit a lean situation! I always say better be safe than sorry. Then again, Bobby doesn't state whether or not the install will be on site or at home so the trip could possibly be even longer.

ahhh Mr. Pute you bring up a good point and i am for sure zip tieing in now... I have to go down main road ways and if i ever have to punch it i don't want to end up doing so forgetting i don't have the by pass valve open and going lean and BOOM!

yeah you will have to zip tie the lines out of the way of the belt lol

If you're stupid enough to pull in front of traffic and you "need" to hammer on it, you deserve to blow up your engine.

Just how I see it at least.

its not a matter of pulling out in front of traffic... its about having to travel on the main road way threw Calgary.. and having to get into lains to turn off onto other roads... people in this city don't let you in a lot of the time and you have to end up given it a fair amount of gas.

just a question can you get the reflash b4 you do it...wont it just make your car run horrible?

humm not 100% sure... but reason for me getting the reflash last is because i want my dads buddy who works at the dealers ship where im taking it, to take a quick look at every thing and make sure it looks like its all on properly..

The guy who I bought my s/c from said it ran like crap after bringing it back to stock. If I had to guess, the only thing really different is the MAP sensor. The resolution of the two sensors both utilize a 0-5v signal. Therefore, stock atmosphere on the 2 bar MAP will show a lower voltage than the stock 1 bar MAP. Because of this, if you put the 1 bar MAP back on the car, the car will run horribly rich.
