EGT Gauge bouncing, ideas?
Tuesday, March 08, 2005 4:32 PM
My EGT gauge (pyrometer actually) sits fine when I start the car up, slowing picking up as I let the car warm up at idle. Then when I hit the gas, it jumps all over the place (meaning around the clock completely at times). Sometimes it will level out but only for a split second.

I checked the connections (wires to gauge, wires to probe, positive voltage and ground) all connections are clean and tight. I even pulled the probe from the downpipe and cleaned it, no luck. FYI, the positive voltage is from a distribution block straight from the battery.

Any suggestions? Faulty gauge? I did take a movie of it, but I don't have anywhere to host it.

Check to make sure the connections on the wiring aren't touching each other. It'll be the connection where the wire from the probe meets the wire going to the gauge.

How far on the downpipe did you put it from the turbo, Either positioning or a faulty gauge I would assume

My Pyrometer was doing the same thing. The problem was the connections... They look ok but when the motor start pushing the cables apparently touch ich other or the positive make ground with the body.

Do this, temporarily take 2 NEW cables and conect them DIRECTLY to the batery.

1>if the problem does not end, take a voltimeter and check the voltage on the gauge during hard acceleration.

2> if the voltage isn't the problem then check if th cables of the sensor arn't touching each other, or touching the firewall

3> if the problem persist change your gauge

Hope this can help you...

I had the same problem and yes the cables are touching.
I thought that thing was god damn crazy, I mean it was jumping bad.

Thanks guys, seems like you think you have it solved. I'll let you know if that works it out in a few days.

Thanks again, this is the reason I come to this site.
