Superchargers and BOVs
Friday, April 01, 2005 5:50 PM
I was cleaning and polishing my supercharger when I noticed a little device on the top right next to the TB mount area. It looks like a BOV that was on my mothers old Turbo Caravan. I'm sure it's not but two questions.

BTW, it is brass colored and has a spring loaded arm that pushes air out the the device.

Is it a BOV?
Why would someone want to BOV on a supercharger? It wouldn't do much good would it?

It allows you to drive the car at partial throttle without making boost by opening the valve to let air into the motor bypassing the blower's rotors. This allows you to have good gas milage by not always being under boost and reduces drag on the motor by not forcing the blower to compress air at all times.

If you have a Boost gauge you can see at what throttle possition the by pass valve closes and when you see boost.

if you have the gm charger then you cant replace the bypass valve. now if you have a centrifugal charger then you can put whatever bov you want on it.

if you have the vortech v9g, u should already have the vortech bov on it if its the kit made by rsm....i have the rsm stage 1 kit..... its insanely loud with the votech bov.... but i dont think u have many options at all with a roots style blower...but if you have a centrifugal, then u should have no problem finding a loud bov... i would recomend the vortech one, good name and sounds awesome.. good luck

Well when I had it running I drove it down the street and only in first I got in it till about 5000 then let off and it seemed to just kind of ease out not a loud phhhsssttt!! It just sounded like the s/c was winding down not like a bov. What could be wrong not to hijack this post.
