Engine project : 2004-2005 !
Thursday, December 16, 2004 7:32 AM
I tought of doing like last year, keeping you guys informed of what is happening with my engine ! Some peoples were interested and tought of doing it for this winter too !

Ok, first of the car is at HT Turbotech, (www.htturbotech.com). Very good guys, very good knowledge and good background (see their web site for detail).

Target :
Street set-up : 15-16 psi with 300whp +
Race : 500hp (engine HP) (Won't use it much, but its just a barrier I want to break)

Lost will be done this winter, here is the breakdown :

Transmission :
-Swap for a getrag transmssion
-Cryotreated gears
-Differentiel Quaife
-Axels level 3 500hp (driveshaftshop.com)
-Bully clutch stage 3
-Fidanza Flywheel aluminium (8 lbs)
-B&M short shifter

Turbo stuff :
-Turbo mitsubishi TD05H Evo3 16G (flows like a 20G)(Reason : Very small yet capable of very high boost)
-Turbonetics wastegate
-Custom exhaust manifold stainless 316L and 321 SS ccollector
-Custom downpipe 316L SS
-52 lbs/hrs Injectors (At 40psi, can go up to 70 psi) (Side feed injectors that fit right into our intake manifold)
-Walbro fuel pump
-Front mount intercooler up&down flow
-3" exhaust in stainless steel
-Polished aluminium piping
-BOV (Not sure which one yet !)

Engine Stuff :
-AEM EMS custom install (Adapt wiring harness to AEM EMS plug (none avaliable for my car), and adapt all sensor output voltage range)
-Wide band UEGO by AEM
-Upgraded ignition system (Coils, wires, ...)
-Relocated battery to trunk !
-Tuning will be done by Chriss Tapp (www.tappauto.com)

Here is the pictures of the stuff that came in :

Axels level 3 (500 hp/tq)

I can trully say good job man, sooooooooooooooooo many people here on the ORG say, yea I am gonna get this and that and they don't, when it comes to a big $$$$ spending and stuff, but you are going through with it and I give you props for hundreds of dollars spent.
Well crap you probably have around 2 grand in all that stuff in the picture.

Good job and I hope you get to your goal man.

Luc,

I dont see how your gonna make 300+whp with less than 20psi. I made about 250 with 13psi....

Id love to see it but I dont see it happening, the math just doesnt quite work. Unless maybee you can squeeze out 3 more HP/psi than I did....

Im guessing 15psi should net you 270ish HP

Either way, sounds like a good plan man.... keep us updated!

I know, but we are gonna wait and see in the spring. One of my friend with a 323 did 367whp on a small 16G at 22psi (on a 1.6L), I know the engine is different.

I don't know about you, but I changed my redline to 7250rpm and did a camshaft and port and polish to be able to get power up to these rpm. So maybe with this will help me.

Did you tune you car very well (Just a question, not an attack) (good aggresive timing and good fuel:air ratio ) ? A good tuning can make world of difference. One of my friend with his SR20 increased his power from 275 to 315whp just by doing a good tuning.
Uh, my car has a pretty good port and polish, 0.1" bigger intake valves .050" bigger exhaust, full radius valve job.... I also have a regrind (whish it was a full billet cam) from Comp.

The car is tuned quite well Id say. Spent a whole day on the dyno.... I think im running like 30degrees of timing even at 13 psi.

The one thing I did have trouble with was my ignition. Seemed like the factory coils would crap out at around 6k. The day I was on the dyno we went back to stock temp plugs and gapped them down smaller (cant recall at the moment). It helped but not completely. Since then I picked up the MSD coils, which I think will solve the spark issues. Curtis had a similar problem, the new coils (he used Jacobs) and iridium plugs solved his issue.

This is the results so far... (you can almost see where the ignition craps out)

Im not saying it cant happen, Im just sharing my expericences.

Keep up the good work!

lol i read this whole thing thinking that you guys had 2.4's and i was going lol

i was having a hard time understanding why you couldnt get more then 250whp with 13psi lol but having a 2.2 ohv makes sense , btw them are awesome numbers for a 2.2 keep up the good work man

and Luc good luck with the build

Intake manifold was ported (by quite alot) and the top was modified (like you) to fit a mustang 65mm TB. The exhaust manifold will ba made of 316L and 321 SS collector. It will be in good part inspired by the Johnny mack exhasut manifold. The flange was custom made out of 316L ( ordered a flange from exploited racing, but the exhaust port holes did not fit, 14" offset !!).
Just a side question I had all the port and polish work done to my head, and also have different cams !! I have a 2.4, but you said something about changing your redline??? Was that done with the AEM or another method????

Thanks guys, and good luck !!!!
To increase redline you have to be able to use it, my camsahft ans port and polish were made to be not restrictive at the CFM demanded by those RPM. I also upgraded the springs/retainers/lifters/rockers/pushrods so that the engine would be able to sustain these RPM (no valve float).
wow, thats crazy (in a good way)

I'd like to see pics of your ported intake manifold Luc if you can post them?

juicedz4 you said you're running 30 degrees of timing (retard???) at 13 psi?

how did you guys solve the stock fuel injector problem?
Re: Engine project : 2004-2005 !
Friday, December 17, 2004 3:15 PM
Ported intake manifold :

For the fuel problem (injectors), I may have somthing good for you guys, I found 52 lbs/hr side feed injectors that fit right into our ports. That rating is at 40psi and they can go up to 75 psi fuel pressure.

Re: Engine project : 2004-2005 !
Friday, December 17, 2004 3:19 PM
sounds good, now all you have to add to the '52lbs/hr side feed injectors' is the word 'cheap' to the front.. haha joking

nice manifold.

I'm working on a pretty wild porting job on the top (at the plenum) I'll post pics when its done and get some negative feed back im sure. We may have to add meat to the underside.

steve,

Thats 30 degrees advance at 13psi. We tried to bring back the timing a touch, and lost power, same with going with more timing. I think thats more than the stock 2.2 does N/A.

As for my way around the side feed injectors, I made the manifold in this picture:

Somewhere I have some pictures that I took when I was building it.... Ill have to dig them up.

Luc I spent the time and the money on my 2.4 with a full P&P, re-grind, and all top of the line manatapart pieces went in my head so I would hope they can take the higher RPM's !!! Did you get a re-flash, or was there some other way you had it done???
Luc we need more info on the 50#hr injectors you've found.

Dan,

thats a sweet intake manifold.

I'm thinking about converting my manifold to top feeds too... but only playing with the idea, and I may not go ahead with it... I might just do the extra injector trick..
