Ok I can see that you just joined the Org, but one thing that would help out alot when asking questions is filling out your profile so people can read what kinda of car you have and modifications that you have made to better answer your questions.

Until then welcome to Org and have a nice day

You may have noticed that we here at Cavalier Connection have been kind of quiet lately on this board, but I thought this might be a good opportunity to give an update on a few things. As some of you know, my two sons and I bought Cavalier Connection from Mike Clements last October. We’ve moved operations from Phoenix to Little Rock Arkansas and have been working hard the past few months to make sure we’re positioned to serve this market right with the quality of products, customer service and support before we do any sort of marketing. That means making sure we have the funding, hands-on product experience, operational processes & tools, R&D equipment/cars/engines, supplier relationships and inventory levels to consistently deliver professional level product and service rivaling companies much bigger than ours. We’ve been hot-rodders/racers for a long time and have become very demanding consumers ourselves with very high standards for what WE expect from a company like ours. Over the years, we’ve bought and installed turbochargers, nitrous and superchargers on several cars we drove every day and raced on weekends. So we know what worked, what didn’t, what made us satisfied customers and what disappointed us. We’re using our ‘consumer experience’ to guide us in how we now act as a provider.

You may have heard the old saying that a chicken makes a contribution to breakfast, but a pig makes a COMMITMENT! Well, we’re making a commitment to this business: We’ve spent tens of thousand of dollars of our own money so far on this business, then went into debt as well; We just signed a lease on a bigger shop; We already have a daily-driven ’99 Cavalier 2.2L OHV with one of our turbo kits; a 2.3L road race Cavalier that will soon get a 2.4L we have on an engine stand ready for a buildup; a drag-only Cavalier that will soon get the Ecotec sitting on a stand ready for a radical buildup & boost; And, we’re waiting delivery of a nice ’02 Ecotec Cavalier we just bought out-of-state which will get one of our turbo kits and be driven daily/raced on weekends; We also acquired quite a bit of additional shop equipment (already had most of what we needed); And how’s this for commitment? - One of my sons sold his beloved Rubicon Jeep just to buy a nice tow vehicle for the business, and my other son is selling his new GTO (and the heads, cam, headers sitting in boxes we were going to install soon) just to get the seat time experience of daily driving and racing the boosted Ecotec. Basically, we’re betting the farm on this company and this market since it’s the ONLY market we’ll serve. It’s a big risk, but we’re confident in our ability to deliver what you want, they way you want it, and we know that doing so will ultimately lead to success. The sport compact market is made up of only 15% domestic with the other 85% being imports. The bigger companies chase the 85% share, leaving the domestic markets with smaller providers. Sure we’re small too, but we intend to operate and serve you with the professionalism of a much bigger company.

Although we just added a line of Level Zero cams, RC injectors and Venoila pistons, we’ve really been focused almost exclusively on our turbo kits lately – working with our piping manufacturers and ceramic-coaters making sure quality and delivery meet our expectations – re-engineering a few aspects/components of the kits – doing test installs – and writing precise installation instructions. Our 3 turbo kits are just about where we want them to be now, so we’re switching focus to the intercooler kits. In a few more weeks we’ll have at least 2 of those up to our standards. Then we’ll build an inventory of all kits so we can ship within a day or so of taking an order. Once there, we’ll shift focus back to ported heads, Eagle rods, Fidanza flywheels & CV shafts, Spec clutches, and several other performance parts for the J-body. Some of you know we’ve also recently made a significant commitment with Cometic to offer a line of MLS head gaskets for all three engines as well.

A couple more notes about our turbo kits: They come COMPLETE with everything necessary for a true bolt-on installation . . . no fabricating, modifying, guessing, or sourcing of parts necessary on our customer’s part. Every component from turbo to waste gate to blow off valve to fully finished and coated piping to every last nut, bolt, washer, fitting, clamp, filter, line and gasket is new and included, along with full instruction we wrote ourselves as we actually installed the kits (in the very near future, instructions will also include photographs of each step). And we make sure each kit can be installed using only the kinds of tools and skills most of our customers will already have.

We’ve asked recent buyers of our kits to be very critical and candid with us on what they liked, didn’t like and what we could have done better – we’re not afraid of criticism and we don’t get defensive – we invite such input as an opportunity for continuous improvement, which is important to us since we intend to be in this business/market for the long haul. We currently have a few customers waiting on delivery of kits who have been patient with us as we incorporate some of those suggestions before delivering their kits. We don’t like asking customers to wait, or to have to delay delivery of kits, but we’re making sure everything is as good as it can be before we build the inventory level necessary for immediate kit delivery.

We’re a little behind on some planned trips to the dyno because we want to be fully prepared to test several boost and tuning variations to get as much intel possible in a couple of days dyno sessions. I can share with you that we had a customer with a 2.2L OHV who recently got 175 wheel horsepower on the dyno with one of our kits running 6 pounds of boost, an inline fuel pump, FMU and injectors. It took a little tuning, but that amounts to a 10 hp gain per pound of boost at the wheels!

We’re also bit behind on getting our new web site up, but again, we want to make sure it meets our high expectations for look, ease of navigation, and functionality before releasing it. We’ve been working hard at returning emails and calls in a timely fashion. We’re not where we’d like to be yet, but have just implemented a new email system and instituted some new phone processes that will help us get there soon.

Sorry about the long dissertation and for boring you with our business plans, but those who have dealt with us since buying the company know we’re very open, candid and customer-focused. We thank you for your patience with us and for your continued support. We know it’s easier to say all the right things than to actually “walk the talk”. And we know we have to earn your respect and business and that’s exactly what we intend to do. We may be quiet for just a little longer making sure we’ve got everything sorted out, but very soon you’ll be hearing a lot from us and about us! Thanks!! - Leo

Are you going to be redesigning the 2.2 turbo header?
How long do you think it will take for the 2200 Cometic gasket to be ready?

A couple of very minor adjustments made to the 2.2/2200 header for ease of fit. Expecting a shipment of those headers/downpipes (heat coated in satin silver) early next week.

On the Cometic deal, they are telling me 3-4 months. There is a lot of engineering and tooling they must do before things are ready to mass produce. Thanks to some of the great members here, I think we're close to getting them (Cometic) everything they need to start that process.

Are the 2.2/2200 headers still going to be mild steel?

Still mild steel but now with 2,300 degree heat coating inside and out to reduce heat sink into steel/welds (for improved durability) and improved flow.

* SYN - I called and spoke to Derrick as requested.

* bballljamal - Come on down!

* Jcavi - We struggle with that question. We don't mind selling individual components to help member DIYers like yourself once in a while, but nearly all parts are sourced or designed specifically to fit our kit & work together correctly - some may not fit properly on your DIY turbo set-up. Plus, we've recently noticed competitors (you know who you are) trying to buy individual components from us to include in their kits. Mike Clements (and now my sons & I), did the homework, the research, the design, the development, the trial & error, the testing, located the best sources/manufacturers, established supplier relationships, paid for initial tooling, satisfied the buy-ins and built inventory - all of which takes much time & money. We're pleased to offer the benefit of all that to our kit customers - and sure don't mind sharing some of it with J-body owners/members here - but can't get comfortable handing it over to competitors who could then reverse-engineer it and/or include it as part of their kit as if it's their own design. We even welcome competition - it leads to innovation - which makes things better for the customer. But if competitors only re-sell our parts, where's the innovation or risk (i.e. "skin in the game")? Without one or both of those two key elements, what real value do they bring to this market? Sorry for the rant Jcavi - just wanted you to know why we struggle with that question. We're still thinking through it, but email us with what you need and we'll see what we can do!

* Adler - Thanks for the emails/good discussion. We're working with a custom header manufacturer on a few more changes to our 2.2L OHV turbo header/down-pipe. High on the consideration list are a 2.5" down-pipe and a brace to provide additional support to the turbo/external waste-gate to keep the header tubes from having to provide all the support. We're working as fast as possible to incorporate the changes, but also have to take many factors into consideration: * Clearances/ease-of-installation (2.5" pipe requires larger turn radius & more room); * Retrofit for customers with our current design; * Initial costs of design & jig retooling; * Performance (of course!); * Manufacturing practicalities (i.e. has to be repeatable & cost effective); etc.

We now heat-coat all headers (in & out) to reduce heat-soak possibly weakening welds or pipe seams. We recently learned a lot about metallurgy (properties/qualities/costs/manufacturing & durability considerations) and switched to laser-cut flanges and new raw materials provider as a result. We also spent a lot of time at a well-respected header manufacturer studying exhaust system vibrational issues, various mandrel bending techniques, and different types of joint/pipe welds to help us reduce as many stresses on the pipes as possible.

Thanks for the chance to update you on just part of what goes on behind the scenes at Cavalier Connection! - Leo

For that much power, it would be a good idea to atleast have forged pistons, forged rods, heavy duty piston rings, and headstuds.
