why is my boost gauge messed?
Sunday, March 27, 2005 1:27 PM
ugh im having the worst luck right now. Today i installed my boost gauge only to find it doesnt work. Its not a Vac/Boost, just a boost gauge. I put in the T fitting in the FPR, all connections where good, started the car, checked for leaks, no leaks, gave it some gas, no PSI. Double checked all my connections, tinkered with it for an hour or so. Still no boost. Turned it off and came back a little bit later, now it reads 2 PSI when its not even connected to anything. Whats wrong?

As far as it reading boost... I believe it won't read boost just sitting there reving up. I know on my boost gauge when I'm just sitting there and rev it the boost gauge only goes to 0 and i have a boost/vac gauge...( Someone correct me if I'm wrong about the reving part!)

As far as it reading 2psi I dont know.....

Take the car down the road and see what happens.

sorry i did take the car down the road. I gave it WOT till about 60 MPH and it didnt move. I dont think its a vacuum leak cause the car is running fine.

On mine, the gauge would actually move if you put pressure on the back of your gauge, make sure it isn't screwed in too tight.

Remove the line from the back of the gauge and then take the car for a spin to see if air will be hissing out of the line when the engine is making boost or when the engine is at idle you should be able to feel suction. If no air come out on the line when the engine is making boost then it is kinked.

k ill try those, but is it ok that the guage when not connected sitting next to me on my desk is reading 2 PSI?

Is it a Auto meter gauge? if so i bet you its the gauge its self that is messed up... you would be about the 5th person i know who has had this happen to them.... one was my buddy

yes its an autometer. I also tookl the gauge off and their was suction coming from the Vacuum line in the car. But no matter how many RPMS i got it was still suction. SHould i try a different Vacuum line other than the one on the TB? I noticed a bigger vauum line on the left side of the blower under the pulley, will this one work?

I had the same problem with my autometer C2 gauge. Turns out some of their gauges need a switched 12v power source that does not cut out during engine crank. The reason is because when the engine cranks it checks the vacuem pressure so it knows how to calibrate itself. I would try moving your power source to a 12v power source that does NOT cut out during engine crank. The guys at autometer are super helpful. If the power source is not your problem give thier tech support a call, they should be able to hook you up.

this gauge doesnt require any power, the only power it uses is for the light bulb

yup im the one that figuered that one out hes like well i hooked it up to the line thats goig to the TB... im like crap evap sensor vacume line, so yeah i think thats how the guage got broke as it was putting to much of the oppisite pressure on it

has anyone ever herd of guages being broke like that, do you guys think that if he hooks it up to the right line this time it will work with his guage, he also told me that he can blow on the tube to his guage and see it move, i dunno but when i tried that with mine i couldnt get it to do anything, could this also be a sign its broke and needs replacing?

thanks for trying to help out so far guys

You would have to have some serious blow power to generate even 1 psi.

I'm not sure how "opposite" pressure can break a gauge, I haven't looked at the boost only gauges, maybe they can only be hooked up to the intake pipe before the throttle body plate so that it can't see vacuum.

theres a fitting coming out of the bottom passengers side of the charger(right on the body) thats the perfect size for your boost gauge hose. thats where mines hooked up works perfectly! you just have to remove the lil plastic vac plug thats over it...

^^ what he said

the only thing i know that came with a plug is for the TB that used to go to the fpr and there was one you had to remove to put the iat sensor in

hell if i know i had mine dealership installed(to have both the charger and the install covered by warranty).. this fitting was plugged with a standard vacuum line plug. if i think of it ill get a pic cause the car is out from under its cover for the first time in a while.. HELLO SPRING! donno where the FPR is hooked up but everything works perfectly the way it is.

that plug they used it supposed to goon on the nipple on the throttle body that the fuel pressure regulator line used to go to. becasue the fuel pressure regulator is suppoed to be hooked up on the lower left portion of the supercharger (so when there is boost present the extra fuel gets added and whatnot) so if it isnt hooked up there and it is still hooked up to the throttlebody then when you are hitting boost the fuel pressure regulator isnt seeing it which will proally cause some big problems down the road

WOW the Gm tech that installed my kit is a #$%@# MORON!
i grabbed my installation manual and headed out to the garage to check it out. they hooked it up wrong had the FPR hooked to the TB. clear as day in the book it shows you where it is meant to go.. i took a sec and rigged it up for now vacuum line and a screw on the TB, and took it for a ride. I found the best power adder for the s/c kit yet i think ill call it "proper installation"..
i gonna take compression readings later today and make sure everythings cool, if not GM is about to find out exactly what a disgruntaled customer is.

just wanted to thank you guys again for probably saving me a major headache!!!

glad we caught that before anything nasty happened, man that would have sucked, if u have teh time if i were you i would double check all of the connections they made and compare to the manual, who knows they could have messed somethin else up also,
