Remote Start with Manual Tranny....
Tuesday, March 15, 2005 9:04 PM
Friend of mine has been thinking about getting remote start for his 03 Focus ZX3...but hes worried that the starter motor will be shot very quickly because it won't engage the clutch, giving it a hard start...is this really true, and if not, how exactly does it work. Thanks to everyone for their time and help

Why do they call it a love seat when its so hard to make love on?

Don't park with it in gear, use the parking brake, disable the clutch safety switch...

I would recommend finding one specifically designed for a manual transmission-equiped car, rather than convert it. They incorporate more saftey features into them, to help protect against accidents. It's still a risky thing, but if they insist, find one made for a manual trans (they aren't easy to find, but they do exist)

I did install remote start on mine witch is a manual, I used a relay to bypass the clutch when the remote start was activated. The Switch is located on the firewall up to where the clutch meets the firewall all the way at the top. It is a interupt for the starter, yellow comming in from the key, purple comming out to the starter. I always leave my car in gear, 4rth to be exact because the e-brake did not work when i got it so I had to leave in in gear, its now a habbit. So I did some testing. When I leave it in forth gear with the E-brake up all the way, the remote start activated and tried to start the car. It moved a good 15cm forward when it was trying to start, then back to its original location. It will try to start it 3 times before it stops and gives me a falure to start code on the remote. I then tryed it in first. I activated it and the car leaped forward about a meter wile draging the back tires. Made a lot of noise and was not a good site to see my car skidding across the road. I did not let it try to start the car 2 more times because I knew that it whould go farther each time it did not start. Then I could make the conclusion that I will not use the remote start ever again. I do let the turbo timer run when I leave the car to let it cool off; nice feature.

that is all

no, that's not the case

I'm an install manager at a car stereo shop, and have installed LOTS of remote starts in manual transmissions

http://ultrastarters.com/starters/1250_2250.htm

this is my favorite, 1500 foot range, and they work great

they have safetys built into them for manual trans,

when you park the vechicle, you set the parking brake and push the footbrake, the remote starter activates and when you remove your key the vechicle stays running until you get out and close the door, this verifies to the remote starter that the vechicle is out of gear, the only problem is, that if you open the door after that, the remote starter will not attempt a start without going through that procedure again

it is illegal to install a remote start intended for an auto trans into a manual trans vechicle, but it's ok to install a manual specific starter
