Replacment clutch questions...need answers on kits
Thursday, March 17, 2005 11:17 PM
I've got a 98 2200 with a 5 speed obviously , anywho my clutch has seen some abuse i'm alittle rough on the pedals compared to some, at the moment if you push on the clutch pedal and get it to move at all the clutch will start slipping, so i'm thinkin of getting an aftermarket clutch from spec, their stage 1 should fit my needs nicely since i'm not planning on huge upgrades, maybe intake and exhaust changes at most, i'm mainly curious to see if any of the guys with 2.2s have had problems with the spec clutch/flywheels.

no problems here, but I have 2.4L.

Spec makes good stuff. I would suggest the Stage 2.

It came with clutch disk, pressure plate, and throwout bearing/slave cylinder.

Oh and the clutch alignment tool you need to install it properly.

I just finished installing my spec stage 1 in my 98 2200 less than a week ago and i love it, way better than a stock slipping clutch. Get it from Karo @ Carcustoms.net and pick up some tranny mounts too.

how much of a pain was it to install the clutch yourself? i'm figuring 2 days and lots of screaming before i manage to get it done, i've got a shop with a cherry picker, some jack stands, a couple floor jacks, air tools, impact, air ratchet and such so i've got alot going for me, i've just never changed the clutch on a front drive car and the local shop i would like to have do it says it'll take them the better part of a week to get it done and they'd rather not do it which puts me back to me doing it. i've got a haynes manual to but id rather ask someone with some experience.

Takes me about 4-6 hours taking my good ol' time. It is not too bad. I would not even bother with a cherry picker. I just unbolted the tranny, pulled it out of the way and changed the clutch. You can drop it out the bottom if you really want it completely out of the way, but there is room to just move it out of the way. It is tight, but doable.

If you do drop it out, the cherry picker would be a good way to raise it back into position, bench pressing it like I did is not the most effective way since you need like 4 hands. Of course you could always hire a friend to help. I guess I shouldn't have done it myself, but oh well.

good luck.

lol, sounds like a fun time, i'll probably have my brother help me with it if i can talk him into it, thats cool to know its not that much of a pain, the shop was talkin about droppin the tranny and needing an engine cradle and all this other crap, said it would probably take a couple days but since their busy it'd take a week to get it done. so i'll just do it myself i guess lol labors cheaper to my brother only charges a 6 pack.

They will do it by the shop manual because it takes the longest and they can really ream you on the labor costs then. You should support the transmission side of the engine, and that is what they use the engine cradle for. Just take a wood 4x4 and put it against the oil pan and snug a jack up under it. That should hold the engine stable so it does not stress the upper engine mount too much.

Well well, a walkthrough for this procedure would be received with much appreciation!

I too intend to upgrade my clutch... the stock ones seems to slip ever so slightly.. just enough to piss me off.
I don't want to pay a mechanic 500 bucks to install a 400 dollar part. I too have a shop w/tools and a forklift... i need to get some jacks/stands tho.

walkthrough? please? pretty please?

I am 90% sure I have seen a walkthrough on the .org before. I don't have a link to it, but I'm almost positive there is one.
