making sure shift cables are adjusted properly

how do you know that the shift cables are adjusted properly? I ask because I just installed the short shifter and like an idiot, i didn't mark the cables (I was too busy trying to figure out how to get them out---when I found out by accident, it was too late to mark them).
Every gear engages fine, even when ripping through really fast, I just want to make sure I won't develop a problem later on.
Thanks

ok, the gears all seem to engage fine. at first, it would go into reverse without using the reverse lock out. I adjusted the side to side cable and it is ok now.

I was searching back through some posts and saw something about someone having a shifter cable adjustment how-to in their GM service manual. anyway I can find this without buying the manual?
