i've been seraching the wreakers for a 5 speed isuzu for a spare. i found a tranny from a 95 sunfire, but it had a hole in the housing, i was told to avoid that tranny because something must have broken inside of it.....Today i found another tranny in a 96 Z24, And it had the Exact same hole at the exact same spot....this is the second isuzu in a row that i've seen this happen to. What part actually breaks off to cause this. would anything else inside the tranny be salvagable?
The spider gears in the differential probably let loose and pieces of them found their way out thru the case.
I did that to one of my isuzu trannies, but nothing made it out of the case. I did have tons of metal on the speed sensor though. That's always a good way to tell if the diff has had problems, becuase the speed sensor is a magnet.
i tired removing the speed sensor, but i couldn't get it out, i took off that 10mm bolt and i was prying on it, it wouldn't budge. How does the speed sensor come out?
And i'm starting to think that this is just something the wreakers are doing just to drain the fluid out the lazy way. i'm gonna go back and if other trannies have holes in it, i'll know its their the ones doing it.
I had trouble too getting mine out, the bolt/plate just holds the VSS down, just get a good grip on the connector and pull straight up and out...
Just my opinion, but that hole looks like it was made from the outside.

is there a trick to get the speed sensor out? like twisting a certian way then pulling it?
Cause i tried everthing, even a flat screw driver and prying on it, NO CHANCE it didnt even budge.
it is just an o-ring around it. twist it back and forth and pull up on it all at the same time. It will come out.

Just get a big screwdriver and big hammer. And if you have to....stay consistent with the theme of the tranny and just add another hole.
yep i lost my izusu saturday night, i had a leak before and dried it out once or twice, i think i lost a tooth or some other random peice and it is locking up in the diff every once and a while. cars in my buddies shop right now getting a tranny and clutch while its down.

however, I bet it is them getting the fluid out the lazy way. If yours doesn't have a hole, why not just tell them you want it free and usr your housing?Just an idea.
I really don't think the hole was put in there to remove the fluid. Junkyards are all about making money. If the tranny is/was good then there's no way they'd punch a hole in it to remove the fluid. Now, maybe the trranny is bad so they put the lazy man hole in it to drain it, but I can't see them destroying a perfectly good tranny to get the fluid out.
Since you saw two trannies with the hole in a similar place I'd say that either they failed the same way or that there's something on the frame of the car that's puching that hole when the car gets into an accident, but from what I remember there's almost nothing close to that side of the diff.
I'd bet that tranny is no good, unless of course it was punctured in the accident, which means you'd have to swap cases.
That hole is from the spider gear retaining pin. Sometimes they slip out and punch their way through the casing. Neons are plagued with that problem too. That's why the diff I have for racing has the pin welded in.

wow, now that takes some force to shoot that out and through the case...but I have seen some blown trannies, and it doesn't totally surprise me.

My 97 Accent did that before I sold it.. Except the hole was the size of my fist.. It dumped oil all over the Blockbuster parking lot

The hole size and shape varies greatly depending on where the diff was oriented when the pin let loose. On CNFX's cav, the hole was just big enough to put your hand through and pull out the spider gears.

LMFAO!!! That pic looks identical to how the casing on my getrag looked when my "final gear" ( as the dealer said ) let go only difference being i had 3 more holes!
