Transmition catching in fifth
Wednesday, April 13, 2005 2:40 PM
I have an 04 Cavalier Ls Sport. About 2 months ago my fifth gear started to grind every time i shift into gear. If I double clutch (engage clutch, shift out of fourth, let clutch out, engage clutch again, shift into fifth) it doesn't happen. One guy told me to get the synchros checked, but i think the clutch is bad. This was my first 5-speed car, so i was hard on the clutch from the day i bought it with 12,000 miles on it. Anyone know for sure what it sounds like? Also, sometimes when i go to shift, the gears will catch and it won't go in unless i let the clutch out and press it back in. Its almost like the clutch doesn't engage, or else i cant drive worth a sh!t, but i definitely dont think it is the latter.

I'd take it to the dealer and show the tech (take him for a ride), your car is probably still under warranty.

yeah, i have 3000 miles left on the warranty, all i have is a half-ass short shifter (someone told me that cutting it would help..... bullsh*t), and a muffler, so the warranty shouldn't be voided. i do know the clutch wouldn't be covered, but would they fix if the synchros if that were the problem?

Why wouldn't the clutch be covered? They would have to fix anything thats wrong unless they can prove it was caused by whatever modifications you've done to your car.

Cause it's a "wear" item. Just like brakes. Unless something hydraulic went bad.

i was told that a clutch isn't covered because it only goes bad by wear and tear, just like brake pads or tires. maybe my source was wrong, but he is a mechanic at the used car lot i work for. i would rather get a stage 2 or 3 clutch and have him install it anyway. what about the synchros?

Could be the syncro not grabbing. Take it to the dealer and have them look at it.

i took my car in to the dealership 2day and they are gonna look at it 2morrow. if the transmission catches in fifth when i shift from neutral at an idle, could it be a synchro. someboby told me it would prolly be the clutch if that were the case. also, anyone know the going rate to have a clutch put in?

well it wouldn't be the clutch itself.........it could be the syncro's or the slave cylinder.

yeah synchros or slave cylinder. Since it is a Getrag tranny, I am guessing synchros. The synchros in those things are soft as plastic.

i dropped my car off wed. morning so they could fix the tranny. they called me and lef ta voicemail sayin the encountered some other problems and had to order more parts and i might not get it for another week. when i called and asked what the the prob was, they said they had to order a seal for the transmission. i am pissed now. they should have ordered that from the start since it would have to be replaced anyways. i just want my damn car back now.

oh man...if it is the axle seals, good luck. I just got mine in. They are special order through GM and come directly from Isuzu in Japan. It took 1.5 weeks for me to get mine.

if that is the case its probably def. the syncro's without the clutch in... move the stick around if it will try to go in a gear and just grinds.. its most likely the synrcro's.. if it is hard and wont go into any gear easily while in neutrl and no clutch its probably a diff. problem clutch ect..

I know this doesn't contribute much to the problem, so I apologize for that... but...

My '00 Z24 has 75k miles and I drive it really hard all the time, and I the guy who owned it before me was a jerk to it too, why haven't I had this problem yet? Good luck? It couldn't be what's causing my shifter to be hard to push into place?

i'm pretty sure its the syncro cause it grinds going from neutral to fifth when i'm just idling. they told me they's have it ready tuesday at the latest tho, so we'll see.

maybe cuz you have the getrag tranny? it mite be a little better i havent heard much about the syncro's on those i know its really common in the isuzu. It sounds like u want the problem?..lol just hold the gas and throw it into every gear and dont use the clutch youll have a problems oon enough..lol why would u buy a car that you know has been beat up before you even bought it? and yes it could be wuts causing ur shifter to be hard before my syncro's went out it was really hard and sloppy espeically 3rd n 5th
