WAI - harsh shifting
Saturday, December 11, 2004 6:59 PM
I searched for a bit,and cant find anything about it, but I put my wai on today, and it seemed to be okay until about 6 or 7 miles later, the cars shifts got extremely harsh. Bear in mind its an automatic on an 04 cavy. everytime the car shifts it feels like its going to freaking drop out of the bottom of the car.
The problem you just described is very common actually. The issue is most likely being caused by your IAT sensor (Intake Air Temp), the sensor that plugged into the stock intake tube.

Chances are you either didn't plug it back in, or it became damaged when you installed your WAI. If it is plugged in to the new intake properly and it is still acting up, then chances are it is malfunctioning.

You can pick one up a new one at your local auto parts store for around $15-$20.

Good Luck, let us know how it goes.

You also should reset the ECU when you install that intake. Unhook the battery for 30 mins, then hook it back up. start the car and let it idle for a little bit to 're-learn' itself.

well im glad its something simple. I had all sorts of bad bad visions of things that could be wrong. Although I suppose it would have been a good excuse to finally drop a manual in...
the effect of the hard shifting that you're experiancing is the same thing you'll get from a Shiftplus or autotrans interceptor...... increased line pressure makes the tranny shift harder and faster...

Yup, Autozone see what they say. They'll bust out the little code scaner for the wonderful price of FREE. I'm gonna guess it'll be IAT sensor HIGH, or LOW output... maybe both. It is possible that you messed it up.

I cleaned my S-Tube once (when I still had the stock intake) and I had removed the IAT sensor. Forgot to put it back in and I got the same symptoms you have. Harsh shifting, CEL. It's most definitely your sensor. Make sure it's all the way in the gromet. Or like SHOoff said, you could have damaged it with the install. Just replace it.
